I Guess Hugh Hewitt Can Call it Quits,....

Yes, it is the year 2010, despite the fact that if you read yesterday’s New York Times you may have thought it was 1998. In the Public Editor column—where, Adrian Chen notes on Gawker, “Times overlords answer questions from normal idiot readers”—managing editor Jill Abramson took a moment to answer the question on everyone’s mind: “What exactly is a blog?” Well okay, perhaps it was just on one person’s mind.

That one person is a retired editor, who wondered, “Is a blog merely the private thoughts of the blogger? Or is a blog a short news story published online?” Abramson helpfully explained that blogs offer “important, up-to-the-minute developments,” real-time updates, and a “less formal structure,” leaving Chen to wonder what’s next for the Public Editor column. Perhaps “someone asking how airplanes stay up in the sky, or What's all this talk about women getting the vote?”

Dress Them AS You See Fit, Just Don't Call Them BROADcasters?

Lebanese anchorwoman Joumana Nammour was among the five to quit

(Newser) – Five female broadcast news anchors at al-Jazeera have walked out after complaining that they were harassed by a senior editor who complained about their make-up and their failure to cover their hair. The women—three from Lebanon, one from Syria, and one from Tunisia—say they were the targets of offensive remarks from the editor about their clothes and lack of decency, the Telegraph reports. They are among the most recognizable female faces in the Middle East due to the channel's popularity.

Three other female anchors at the Qatar-based channel have registered complaints but remain in their jobs. An internal al-Jazeera inquiry cleared the editor in question, saying that the channel had every right to dictate "the spirit and principles of the channel and the image it wishes to present." Sources at al-Jazeera say the dispute runs much deeper than just the dress code and that the network is increasingly split by ideological clashes.

Poor Taste Doesn't Even BEGIN to Describe This!

(Sept. 2) -- Denunciations, denials and apologies are flying after an advertisement that evokes 9/11 quickly spread around the blogosphere.
AdFreak.com called attention to the purported World Wildlife Fund print ad that shows dozens of airliners taking aim at Manhattan. The copy reads: "The tsunami killed 100 times more people than 9/11. The planet is brutally powerful. Respect it. Preserve it."

Surely, You Jest, Tierney,...

So, Brian "BRINO?" Tierney buys local newspapers from nasty, out-of-town and out-of-touch Knight-Ridder and promises a fresh start for Philadelphia newspapers.

He then promptly runs the business into the ground dispensing the same DNC-flavored Kool-Aid as every other major city press.

Now he's bankrupt and trying to re-organize without selling to another "outsider," huh?

Well, BRINO, here's a few ideas on how to bring the press back to respectability in Philly:

1. Sell off that "Newspaper That Shall Not Be Named" to a competitor. I know, I know: this is Philadelphia and between the Democratic Party, trade unions and the Phillies in the National League East, we no longer grasp the concept of "competition." But you used to run a business, Brian, so you should still remember the rules of capitalism - its what made this country.

2. Fire the ENTIRE editorial board. Bring in people who understand "fair and balanced." Hell, it works for Fox News,...

3. Stick to reporting NEWS. Michael Jackson isn't news. He's entertainment. Leave his plastic, pedophilic corpse to People Magazine. Hire reporters, not puppets with a leftist agenda.

If not, then here's to the New York Post opening up a branch here in town.

THAT'S MY OPINION AND YOU'RE ENTITLED TO IT!

Repeat After Me: NO MEDIA BIAS

The $15M hooker strikes again:

ABC, CBS and NBC all led Friday night with President Obama’s decision to appear in the White House press room to backtrack on the fury he inflamed by presuming “stupidity” by the police in the Professor Henry Gates alleged “racial profiling” incident, but only Katie Couric trumpeted Obama’s appearance in the White House briefing room -- which the CBS Evening News ran for an uninterrupted four solid minutes -- as “extraordinary” and “really unprecedented,” before she pouted over how “the timing could not be worse. Just as he was pushing so hard for health care reform and having some pretty serious setbacks.”

She pressed Bob Schieffier to provide Obama with guidance to get back on track on health care: “And how do you think the President can, if he can, resuscitate this whole effort?” Schieffer advised the obvious: “What he's got to do, I think now, is set out some specific things that he wants them to do and then push them to do it.” (Between the four minutes of Obama and when Couric turned to Schieffer, CBS aired a piece from reporter Bill Whitaker on why blacks fear the police.)

Will He Get "The Jackson Treatment?"

NEW YORK — Cronkite was the broadcaster to whom the title "anchorman" was first applied, and he came so identified in that role that eventually his own name became the term for the job in other languages. (Swedish anchors are known as Kronkiters; In Holland, they are Cronkiters.)

Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman of the U.S. networks' golden age who reported a tumultuous time with reassuring authority and came to be called "the most trusted man in America," died Friday. He was 92.

Cronkite's longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebral vascular disease.

Adler said, "I have to go now" before breaking down into what sounded like a sob. She said she had no further comment.

Cronkite was the face of the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981, when stories ranged from the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to racial and anti-war riots, Watergate and the Iranian hostage crisis.

It was Cronkite who read the bulletins coming from Dallas when Kennedy was shot Nov. 22, 1963, interrupting a live CBS-TV broadcast of the soap opera "As the World Turns."

So,..what will it be? Ad nauseum "news" about America's first anchorman or a classy celebration of his life and mourning of his death?

Wasn't Benedict Arlen's Defection Supposed to HELP the Dems?

A new Rasmussen Reports poll released this week said Republicans now lead Democrats in their latest generic congressional ballot. This is only the second time in more than five years of daily or weekly tracking this has happened, the pollster said.

The new national telephone survey found that 41 percent would vote for their district’s Republican candidate while 38 percent would choose the Democrat. More surprising is 31 percent of conservative Democrats said they would vote for their district’s Republican candidate.

Overall, the GOP gained two points this week, while the Democrats lost a point in support. Still, Rasmussen cautions readers about interpreting the results as representing a trend that Republican support is increasing.

The polling organization noted the GOP’s improved position comes primarily from falling Democratic support. Democrats are currently at their lowest level of support in the past year, while Republicans are at the high water mark.

During the past year, Democratic support has ranged from a low of 38 percent to a high of 50 percent. In that same time period, Republicans have been preferred by 34 percent to 41 percent of voters nationwide.

The trend so far for the 2009 calendar year has been that Democratic support has ranged from 38 percent to 42 percent. The Republican range has been from 35 percent to 41 percent.

The year began well for Democrats, who were following the coattails of President Barack Obama. They held a six- or seven-point lead over the GOP for the first several weeks of 2009.

But this began to slip in early February, after Mr. Obama’s inauguration and after the new congressional session began. The Republicans took a two-point lead for a single week in mid-March. Since then, the results have ranged from dead even to a four point lead for the Democrats.

The gender split for the parties is pretty consistent.

Men favor the GOP by a 45 percent to 34 percent margin. Women prefer the Democrats by a 42 percent to 38 percent margin.

All Talk, No Action

NEW YORK - CNN is poised to finish March third in the prime-time weeknight cable news ratings behind Fox News Channel and MSNBC, the first time this has ever happened for the channel that pioneered the genre nearly three decades ago.

CNN says its overall business is healthy and it is not straying from its straight news path. But it has been suffering more audience erosion than its rivals since the peak days of the presidential election, further proof that the opinionated prime-time shows on Fox and MSNBC have greater audience loyalty. (Actually, its proof that when you lie for a living, people will stop paying attention to you - BA)

CNN's weekday prime-time ratings are relatively flat compared to last year during the primary campaign, up 1 percent from March 2008, according to Nielsen Media Research. Fox's ratings have jumped 30 percent and MSNBC, the new No. 2, is up 24 percent. The biggest growth in cable news is for CNN's partner, HLN, formerly Headline News, which is up 62 percent.

Fox remains on a mountain above its two closest competitors, with its prime-time audience in March more than that of MSNBC and CNN combined. The O'Reilly Factor has done particularly well, keeping more of its postelection audience than anything else on CNN and MSNBC.

Through Wednesday, Fox was averaging 2.73 million prime-time viewers in March. MSNBC had 1.16 million and CNN had 1.14 million. The March ratings period ends Friday, and it's doubtful CNN will be able to overcome MSNBC.

I Didn't Know Fast Eddie Rendell Was Irish,..

Or maybe it was the promise off free, green beer?

Inquirer Staff Writer
The St. Patrick's Day Parade will go on.

Organizers of the 238-year-old parade are confident that - with a pledge of up to $20,000 from the owners of The Inquirer - they will raise the money needed to pay for services such as police and sanitation that the cash-strapped city said it wouldn't cover this year.

Philadelphia Media Holdings L.L.C., which owns The Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, will match, dollar for dollar, donations to cover the $40,000 that the city said it would charge parade organizers.

"We are Philadelphians," Brian P. Tierney, the company's executive officer and the newspapers' publisher, said yesterday. "Even in these tough economic times, as local owners we want to support this community."

Prompted by an article in yesterday's Inquirer, Tierney called parade director Michael Bradley with the offer to bolster fund-raising efforts.

With Tierney's challenge, "there is no question in my mind we will raise it all," Bradley said.

Now, he said, he can refocus on the March 15 parade, which is to include more than 200 groups and 20,000 marchers.

A month ago, city representatives told organizers that they had to come up with $110,000 for expenses, Bradley said.

A shortened parade route dropped the cost to $30,000, plus another $10,000 for city-approved vendors for portable toilets and other services.

Already struggling to raise $70,000 in normal parade-related expenses, Bradley said he had worried the added expense would halt the parade.

Today, he said, he feels he has an angel looking over his shoulder.

"I see the advantage of locally owned newspapers. . . . They care about their community," Bradley said. "What a difference over some media conglomerate."

I guess even on the verge of bankruptcy, when Fast Eddie's got your back, you can throw money around like a drunken sailor, huh, Tierney?

DoubleStandarddradnatSelbuoD (Redux)

So PA Governor "Fast Eddie" Rendell managed to stick something into his mouth other than a free cheesesteak - his foot.

So, he thinks only single, carrier driven women are suited for cabinet positions?

Along comes Katie Couric-wannabe Campbell Brown to drop in her two cents:

The story

How many times have politicians been warned about the dangers of an open microphone? And yet, on Tuesday, the lectern mic at the National Governors Conference picked up this little nugget from Pennsylvania's Democratic Gov. Ed Rendell.

He's having a conversation near the lectern about President-elect Barack Obama's choice for to lead the Homeland Security Department, Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano. Here is what Rendell said about Napolitano:

Rendell: Janet's perfect for that job. Because for that job, you have to have no life. Janet has no family. Perfect. She can devote, literally, 19-20 hours a day to it

Wow. Now, I'm sure Gov. Napolitano has many qualifications for the job beyond having no family, and therefore the ability to devote 20 hours a day to the job. Watch Campbell Brown's commentary

But it is fascinating to me that that is the quality being highlighted here as so perfect. C'mon. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff is married with two grown children. His predecessor, Tom Ridge, had a family. Anybody remember a debate about whether they would have trouble balancing the demands of work and family?

But,...isn't this the same "journalist" who gave a certain pro-life mother of five (one of whom is a special needs child) a ton of grief over being able to be a mom AND Vice-President of the United States??

What Planet is LA On??

The LA Times helps draw the line in the sand between liberals and conservatives:

Rice is a liberal multilateralist, and Bolton, who spent a tumultuous year at the U.N. before resigning when it became clear that he wouldn't be confirmed by the Senate in 2006, is a conservative unilateralist. She would be warmly welcomed in New York if confirmed, and would be in a strong position to rebuild the bridges burned by Bolton, which current Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has had a tough time doing, given that he represents a deeply discredited, lame-duck administration.

Bolton's appointment was President Bush's way of thumbing his nose at the U.N. The ambassador's bullying, arrogant approach rendered him ineffective as a diplomat, but it did please a conservative wing of the Republican Party that has long despised the U.N. in the same way, and for many of the same reasons, it despises big government: It's bureaucratic, slow and rarely gets much done. Yet it's also utterly indispensable. Warts and all, it is the world's only meaningful bulwark against nuclear proliferation, human-rights violations, genocide and wars of conquest .

The TrekMedic is ROFLHAO:

What genocides has the Untied Nations stopped recently? Srebrenica,Bosnia?

Rwanda? Darfur??

"Wars of conquest?" Yeah, I seem to remember soemthing about those faggotty-blue helmets getting between the Russians and the Georgians earlier this year,...oh, wait,..that was all the Jagermeister I drank one night and the result of the ensuing hallucinations the drink causes!

Hmmmph! And the MSM paints conservatives as "out of touch" with reality?

Inside the Mind of Obama Supporters,....

The Vast Right Wing Conspiracy at Work! And you thought the DailyKrud was a raging loon,..

From regional kommisar Daniel UA and his Young Socialists of Philadelphia:

Brian Tierney Uses the Inquirer to Spread Right-Wing Talking Points, and Settle Old Scores
Submitted by Dan U-A on Mon, 10/20/2008 - 8:38am.

Yesterday, the Inquirer endorsed Barack Obama. Not a shock, right? The endorsement was nice and well thought out. But then, there was something strange... The paper also published a 'dissenting opinion,' hid under anonymity. Seems pretty weird, and it is not something I have ever seen. But when you actually read it, the implications are pretty clear: Brian Tierney, the former communications guy for local Republicans, appears to be doing exactly what he said he would not do: using his newspaper to push his own agenda.

And why does Brian Tierney the dissenting opinion want McCain?

Perhaps, my friends, you have heard of Joe the Plumber?

There are other reasons Tierney the dissenter is for McCain too- and they are pretty standard. He was a POW, national security, he is a Mavericky Maverick who will get all Maverick-like when the times call for a Maverick of Maverickian proportions.

But then, Brian Tierney the dissenter had to mention why he was against Obama. And in doing so, he gave us the dumbest, stupidest recitation of right-wing talking points that you will find in a major newspaper. It could literally be pulled off of a far-right website:

Ask people to describe McCain and the first response often is, "He's honest." What you see is what you get. There are no mysterious associations to dance around. No 20-year attendance of a church whose pastor preached anti-American sermons. No serving on an education reform panel with a domestic terrorist. No financial support from a convicted felon. No ties to a group currently under investigation for possible voter-registration fraud.

Even for Tierney the dissenter, that is a stupid paragraph and shows that while he dutifully gets his right-wing talking points in the mail, he doesn't pay attention much beyond them. Lets take that felon line, for example. If Tierney the dissenter had watched as John McCain was interviewed by that hard hitting journalist David Letterman, he would have known that not only did McCain get financial support (including donations, a fundraiser, etc) from a convicted felon- the oh-so-wonderful G. Gordon Liddy- but that he was proud of it.

The whole thing seems like it is straight from an pitch man who got used to spouting off some unchallenged talking points on ABC's Inside Story. I wonder why?

The TrekMedic finally stops being doubled over with laughter to point out:

OK, Danny,..we've always thought your perception of reality was a little off, but,..jeez,...Shrillary couldn't have written a more paranoid talking point piece on HuffPo or Vanity Fair if she tried!

Where do I start? Oh, yeah,..you're ASSUMING it was Brian Tierney that posted the dissenting opinion. No name written,..did you hack his computer and verify the IP address? Maybe it WAS Kevin Ferris?

And this would be the same Brian Tierney who's liberal-press papers have been kissing the ass of the Obamessiah so much that they'er having troubles paying the bills over at the Inky and that other paper?

Hell, even one of your own, the level-headed "Zorro" who posted this:

A few observations:

* It's Tierney's paper; he has the right to say what he wants, + we have the right to choose to buy it or not.

* Tierney could easily have forced the Editorial Board to either refrain from any endorsement or to endorse McCain; the fact that he did not, + 'merely' wrote his own 'dissenting opinion' actually speaks well for him when compared to what he easily could have done. In other words, he chose to speak his own mind, rather than blatantly interfere w/editorial decisions.

* The David Axlerod reference was extremely juvenile, and completely irrelevant.

Quisling!!

Not content to befoul the Philadelphia air with his premature obituary on Thursday in The Paper That Shall Not Be Named, Mike Smerconish goes the Full Monty today in the Inkwaster and fully endorses the Obamessiah:

HT to Captain America for the pic!

I've decided.

My conclusion comes after reading the candidates' memoirs and campaign platforms, attending both party conventions, interviewing both men multiple times, and watching all primary and general-election debates.

John McCain is an honorable man who has served his country well. But he will not get my vote. For the first time since registering as a Republican 28 years ago, I'm voting for a Democrat for president. I may have been an appointee in the George H.W. Bush administration, and master of ceremonies for George W. Bush in 2004, but last Saturday I stood amid the crowd at an Obama event in North Philadelphia.

Click the link and read his reasons for buying into the lies! Try not to lose your Sunday Brunch in the process!!

An Obit for the Smerconish Show,....

HT the Matt Best at PAWaterCooler as he rebuts Mike Smeroconish's premature McCain obit:

Michael Smerconish decided that the election is over 19 days before it actually happens. Frankly I’m thrilled. It means arrogant individuals like Mr. Smerconish don’t need to show up on election day and vote.

Mr. Smerconish decided to get out in front and write an obituary of the McCain campaign. You can read the memo here.

I have my own memo that I’d like to share with all PAWatercooler readers.

The GOP: The first obituary

Memo

To: Michael Smerconish and other RINO Republicans of PA

From: Matthew Best

Date: Nov. 5, 2008

Congratulations comrade. Your candidate won. I’m sure you are sitting around in some plush Philly office space, being all proud of yourself, and thinking that you taught those darn conservatives from the rest of the state a lesson. You showed them that they are wrong. What a sweet taste of victory that must be.

But what exactly did you win? Clearly, the old phrase that those who know not history are doomed to repeat it should be paid attention to. Because of your efforts and other RINOs like yourself, you’ve succeeded in ensuring that the GOP will be a almost permanent minority for some time to come, if it survives at all. Kind of reminds me of those 40 years that the Democrats controlled Congress. Republicans didn’t have a say in government. They didn’t have a say in policy. So they spent time being good country club Republicans, raising a voice every now and then, but not rattling the Democrat majority too often. They never wanted to stop the flow of table scraps that the Democrats would throw to them.

And for what purpose anyway, especially if there is only a nuance of difference between the parties that you are advocating. What is there fight about if both parties support abortion? What is there to fight about if both parties support tax increases? What is there to fight about if both parties are for bigger government? What is there to fight about if the Republicans are moderate to liberal and the Democrats are moderate to liberal? Isn’t that what you are really advocating? Peace at the price of chains. God forbid we rock the boat.

All I can say is this - keep doing what you’re doing. You are helping to ensure that the party under RINO leadership ends up the way of the Whig party. The sooner that happens, the better off we’ll be. Then we can leave RINOism on the trashheap of history.

In the mean time, enjoy the Obama paradise that you worked to achieve. You deserve it. Be sure you get your ushanka and wear it proudly - I hear winter is going to be extra cold and energy prices are going to soar. But I’m sure you don’t mind - especially now that we’ve elected Obama, who will solve all our problems. Besides, you’ll get table scraps, right?

The TrekMedic appends:

I've already switched to Bill Bennett. I just couldn't stomach Smerconish kissing RINO-in-charge Specter's ass everyday!

Nearly Everyone Reads the Philadelphia Bulletin,...

Tough times for Philadelphia's leftists rags? Hopefully a boycott of The Paper That Shall Not Be Named is playing a part in this:

New York - The owners of Philadelphia's two major daily newspapers missed an interest payment once again as they seek a new agreement with lenders to account for the continuing decline they expect in advertising revenue.

The latest move appears aimed at forcing lenders to renegotiate, something many have been doing with newspaper companies as the worsening economy puts additional pressure on an advertising market that - long before the current downturn began - already was suffering from a migration of readers and ad dollars to the Internet.

Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, which owns The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia XXXXX XXXX, said it had enough cash on hand to make its Oct. 1 payment, but was awaiting completion of the renegotiations to release the money.

Although the company made a reference to "the chaos, volatility and uncertainty in today's financial and credit markets" of recent weeks, the newspapers' troubles began long before that. The company first missed a payment in June, and in August it proposed restructuring its lending agreements to help it weather the drop in advertising revenue.

Philadelphia Media's missed payment of an unspecified amount, disclosed in a statement Friday, follows a decision by the Star Tribune of Minneapolis to skip a $9 million quarterly debt payment to save cash as it, too, tries to restructure its debt.

In both cases, the owners took on debt to buy the papers from McClatchy Co., which itself restructured its lending agreements last month. A group of investors led by former advertising executive Brian Tierney bought the two Philadelphia papers for $562 million in June 2006; Avista Capital Partners acquired the Star Tribune for $530 million in March 2007.

"Both of those went to companies that bought what they thought were undervalued properties at a low time in the market and found out they had bought too early," Ken Doctor, a media analyst with Outsell Inc., said Monday. He said advertising revenue has declined faster than anticipated all year.

Wither the Inkwaster?

So asks Lisa "Bluftooni" Mossie over at Conservative Powerhouse PAWaterCooler: (waiting for that invite Alex,... ;-) )

Just how dire are things over at the Inky? August 11

Filed under Cities - Philadelphia, Media by LisaMossie

Maybe this will give you a hint:

Members of the Teamsters union working at Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, the parent company of the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Daily News newspapers, have voted to forego a $25-a week raise they were set to receive on beginning September 1st in an effort to help preserve their jobs.

Newspapers nationwide have been afflicted with declining circulation and revenue and the union is the first of the media company’s 11 unions to take such action. The 10 other unions would have to approve the measure for it to become a reality…

Teamsters voting against a pay raise. Need I say more?
