Louisiana Dems Want Governor Jindal to File 'Who Dat' Lawsuit

The Democrats' governing body Saturday called on Jindal to defend the rights of Louisiana citizens to use the term "Who Dat" and the New Orleans Saints' fleur-de-lis symbol.



BATON ROUGE, La. -- Louisiana Democrats want Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal to get into the "Who Dat" fray with the NFL.

The Democrats' governing body Saturday called on Jindal to defend the rights of Louisiana citizens to use the term "Who Dat" and the New Orleans Saints' fleur-de-lis symbol.

Some T-shirt makers have received cease-and-desist letters from the NFL demanding they stop selling shirts with the traditional cheer of Saints fans. The NFL claims the shirts infringe on a trademark it owns.

The issue has outraged residents, including members of the state's congressional delegation, who say it's ridiculous for the NFL to claim ownership of a saying that predates the Saints.

Jindal's office didn't immediately respond to a request for comment Saturday.

Tom Brookshier, broadcaster and Eagles great, dies

Tom Brookshier, according to his friends, knew how to tackle.

Whether on the football field or as a television and radio personality, his impact was equally immense and intense.

He was an all-pro on the last Eagles team to win an NFL championship, in 1960, and was part of CBS's top NFL broadcast team during the 1970s along with his close friend Pat Summerall. In the late 1980s he hired Angelo Cataldi, launching the 610 WIP sports-talk format that remains in place today.

Mr. Brookshier, 78, died Friday of cancer at Lankenau Hospital.

"He was a very complex and wonderful person," said Dick Vermeil, the former Eagles coach who later became a broadcast partner with Brookshier at CBS. "He had great compassion for people, and he could be very intense. He was a tough football player, but he was also gentle as a teddy bear. He had just an unbelievable blend of positive qualities. He's a Philadelphia icon just like Chuck Bednarik."

A New Mexico native who played college football at the University of Colorado, Mr. Brookshier came to Philadelphia when the Eagles selected him in the 10th round of the 1953 NFL draft. In the years that followed, he fell in love with Philadelphia, according to his wife, Barbara.

Bin Laden Blames U.S. for Global Warming in New Tape

CAIRO — Usama bin Laden sought to draw a wider public into his fight against the United States in a new message Friday, dropping his usual talk of religion and holy war and focusing instead on an unexpected topic: global warming.

The Al Qaeda leader blamed the United States and other industrialized nations for climate change and said the only way to prevent disaster was to break the American economy, calling on the world to boycott U.S. goods and stop using the dollar.

"The effects of global warming have touched every continent. Drought and deserts are spreading, while from the other floods and hurricanes unseen before the previous decades have now become frequent," bin Laden said in the audiotape, aired on the Arab TV network Al-Jazeera.

QB Kurt Warner retires, ending 12-year NFL career

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Kurt Warner has called an end to one of the great storybook careers in NFL history. The 38-year-old quarterback announced his retirement from the game on Friday after a dozen years in a league that at first rejected him, then revered him as he came from nowhere to lead the lowly St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, winning the first of them.

Written off as a has-been, he rose again to lead the long-suffering Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl a year ago.

Warner, a man of deep faith who carried a Bible to each post-game news conference, walked away with a year left on a two-year, $23 million contract, knowing he still had the skills to play at the highest level.

Italy's Disaster Chief Blasts 'Pathetic' U.S. Aid Work in Haiti

Italy's top disaster official blasted the U.S.-led relief effort in Haiti as a "pathetic" failure that is turning a national tragedy into a "vanity show for the television cameras."

Guido Bertolaso, the head of Italy's Civil Protection Agency, told Italian television on Sunday that the U.S. military "tends to confuse military intervention with emergency intervention," and that despite the presence of 13,000 U.S. troops there, "no one is giving orders."

He said there is a danger that aid will be lost by the "inefficient" operation.

Bertolaso threw darts at targets ranging from former President Bill Clinton to the United Nations, which he faulted for throwing aid packages at the island and hoping for the best.

'Chemical Ali' executed in Iraq after Halabja ruling

Ali Hassan al-Majid, a former Iraqi official known as "Chemical Ali", has been executed by hanging, a government spokesman has announced.

Majid, an enforcer in Saddam Hussein's regime and his cousin, had earlier been sentenced to death four times for genocide and crimes against humanity.

Earlier this month, he was sentenced to death for ordering the gas attack on the Kurdish town of Halabja in 1988.

It is believed that about 5,000 people died in the attack.

Iraqi jets swooped over Halabja and for five hours sprayed it with a lethal cocktail of mustard gas and the nerve agents Tabun, Sarin and VX.

What is the source of this breathless hysteria? Memories of the 1994 Republican midterm landslide. But everyone should take a deep breath: The 2010 midterms will not be a repeat of 1994. Why? Because almost everything we think we know about the 1994 election is wrong.

Let's look at the 1994 election. How was the GOP able to pick up 52 House seats and eight Senate seats to take control of Congress for the first time in over four decades? This was the second year of Bill Clinton's presidency, and his signature initiative -- healthcare reform -- had just failed. Although economists insisted the recession was over, unemployment remained high and wages were stagnant.

Air America Radio is shutting down its operations after company files for bankruptcy.

Air America Radio, a progressive radio network that once aired commentary from Al Franken and Rachel Maddow, said Thursday it is shutting down immediately.

The company founded in April 2004 said it ceased airing new programs Thursday afternoon and will soon file to be liquidated under Chapter 7 bankruptcy. It began broadcasting reruns of programs and would end those as well Monday night.

Air America said 10 consecutive quarters of declining ad revenue and the difficulty of making money on the Internet contributed to its financial woes.

"The very difficult economic environment has had a significant impact on Air America's business. This past year has seen a `perfect storm' in the media industry generally," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

The network had some 100 radio outlets nationwide.

Franken, a Democrat, hosted his own show from 2004 to 2007 before going on to become a U.S. senator from Minnesota last year after a close election. Maddow went on to host her own TV show on MSNBC.

Boston, Massachusetts (CNN) -- Republican Scott Brown has won Tuesday's special election for the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by liberal Democrat Ted Kennedy, CNN projects based on actual results.

Brown, a Massachusetts state senator, had 52 percent of the vote to 47 percent for state Attorney General Martha Coakley, the Democratic contender, with over 69 percent of precincts reporting in results from the National Election Pool, a consortium of media organizations including CNN. Independent candidate Joseph Kennedy, a libertarian who is not related to the Kennedy political family of Massachusetts, had 1 percent.

At stake was President Obama's domestic agenda, including health care reform.

The vice-chairman of the UN's climate science panel has admitted it made a mistake in asserting that Himalayan glaciers could disappear by 2035.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) included the date in its 2007 assessment of climate impacts.

A number of scientists have recently disputed the 2035 figure, and Jean-Pascal van Ypersele told BBC News that it was an error and would be reviewed.

In December, it emerged that four leading glaciologists had prepared a letter for publication in the journal Science arguing that a complete melt by 2035 was physically impossible.

"You just can't accomplish it," Jeffrey Kargel from the University of Arizona told BBC News at the time.

Polls published in the last week of the race show Republican Scott Brown and Democrat Martha Coakley in a dead heat, worrying Obama and Democrats about the possibility of losing what once was considered one of their safest seats.

A Brown victory would give Senate Republicans the votes to stop the health care bill -- and the rest of the president's agenda -- through a filibuster, a tactic they employed after Democrats took control of Congress after the 2006 elections. However, they have been unable to use that tactic after Democrats gained their 60-vote majority in the Senate in 2008.

CRANBERRY, Pa. - A Pennsylvania state trooper was responding to a domestic call at a rural home when he got out of his police cruiser and was shot and killed.

State police say Trooper Paul G. Richey was shot shortly after he got to the home in Venango County on Wednesday morning. Richey had been a state trooper for 16 years.

State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski says Richey's sacrifice and service will not be forgotten.

The shooting happened in a rural area where homes are spread far apart and several schools were placed on lockdown as police searched for the gunman.

The area is near Oil City, which is about 80 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Cowboys fan says Eagles fans assaulted her

A Bethlehem woman says she was attacked by two Eagles fans for wearing a Tony Romo jersey before last weekend's game, according to news reports.

Per the Allentown Morning Call, Jaime Wert, 27, was returning home from a convenience store around 9:30 p.m. Friday night when she heard someone yell, "Hey Romo!"

When Wert turned around, she was confronted by two men wearing Eagles jerseys, one of whom struck her in the face, causing a minor cut.

''I really freaked out because I could feel the blood running down my cheek,'' she told the Morning Call. ''I kicked the one guy in his leg and they both ran.''

Per the report, Wert said the attackers may have thought she was a man because she had her hair tucked into her shirt.

Wert said she did not get a good enough look at the men to give a detailed description to police.

N.J. Legislature Approves Medical Marijuana Bill

TRENTON, N.J. - The Legislature approved a bill that would make New Jersey the 14th state to allow chronically ill patients access to marijuana for medical reasons.

Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine supports the legislation and could sign it before leaving office next week, making it law.

The bill, signed Monday, allows patients with ailments such as cancer, AIDS and multiple sclerosis to buy up to 2 ounces (57 grams) of marijuana a month at state-monitored dispensaries. Fox 29's Steve Keeley reports that would allow patients to make about eight marajuana joints per day.

Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, a Democrat, was a co-sponsor of the bill and pushed for it for years. He said medical marijuana can alleviate suffering and there's no evidence it increases overall drug use.

"I don't think we should make criminals out of our very sick and terminally ill," he said.

Incoming Republican Gov. Chris Christie, a former federal prosecutor, said he supported the concept of the bill but remained concerned that a loophole could lead to abuses.

A compromise bill was worked out after some other lawmakers expressed similar concerns. For example, a provision allowing patients to grow marijuana was removed.

Driving while high would continue to be against the law.

The other states that permit medical use of marijuana are Alaska, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Maine, Michigan, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.

DETROIT — Ford Motor Co.'s market momentum got a lift Monday by winning both the 2010 North American Car and Truck of the Year awards.

Ford's Fusion Hybrid midsize sedan took top car honors and its versatile Transit Connect compact van snagged truck of the year at the Detroit auto show.

Ford, the only U.S.-based automaker to avoid bankruptcy protection, has fared better than its two Detroit rivals, with overall sales down 15 percent last year compared with a 36 percent drop for Chrysler and a 30 percent decline for GM.

Ford's final month of 2009 was strong, with a 33 percent increase in sales thanks to strong demand for midsize cars. Last year, it gained U.S. market share for the first time since 1995, helped by critical raves for its fuel-efficient cars, like the midsize Fusion. Reid Mounted Aggressive Campaign to Minimize Obama 'Negro' Comment

The Senate majority leader, aware of the impact of his racially tinged remarks about President Obama, went on phone calling spree to drum up support.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid went into damage control over the weekend, mobilizing a raft of supportive statements both in Washington, D.C., and Nevada after news broke that during the 2008 presidential campaign he said Barack Obama had an advantage because he's "light-skinned" and has "no Negro dialect" unless he wants to employ it.

According to several sources familiar with the senator's actions, Reid called Obama from his home in Searchlight, Nev., on Saturday. Obama took the call in the Oval Office. Reid also spoke by phone to numerous senators and took part in the regular weekend call with Sen. Jack Reed of Rhode Island to go over the Sunday show talking points on his gaffe and other topics.

Reed and Reid were on the call with staff members for Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Joe Lieberman. The message: Reid did it, it was wrong, he apologized immediately, the president has accepted the apologize, time to move on.

But Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Reid should resign. He also accused Democrats of hypocrisy on the matter.

"There is this standard where Democrats feel that they can say these things and they can apologize when it comes from the mouths of their own. But if it comes from anyone else, it is racism," Steele told "Fox News Sunday."

The Obessesions of Obama

As Year 1 of the Obama administration comes to a close, it is becoming increasingly apparent (at least to people who actually THINK about our country) that this administration will be characterized by two things:

1 - Obama's singled-minded pursuit of a domestic agenda, at all costs, to transform America into a European-style pseudo-socialist state (at best) or a wholly-socialist state (at worst).

2 - The administration's obsession with avoiding ANYTHING that remotely resembles actions taken by the GW Bush administration, even if it may HELP a situation.

On article 1 - you know you have a problem when your military heads all but shame you into approving a troop increase as we shift our attention away from Iraq to Afghanistan. You know you have a problem when, on the cusp of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Obama stood idly by while young Iranians continue to speak out and struggle against a regime that threatens to destabilize not only the Middle East, but the nuclear world as we know it. And, you know you have a problem when a terrorist nearly succeeds in taking down a plane and destroying nearly 250 lives, and you stay and play in Hawai'i and your Homeland Security Advisor goes off for s CHRISTmas ski trip!

On article 2 - Two words from Obamaville: "Blame Bush." Two words back from the populace: "Grow a set!" Ignoring anything and everything "W" did right for this country, including the complete halt of terrorist attacks on US soil, weakens us and our standing in the world. Sure, "W" entered the White House with a Republican majority in both houses. So did Obama. The big difference? Bush was previously the governor of a large state and learned the art of the deal. Obama is a self-centered snob and former community organizer, surrounded by sycophants who either follow his lie of "hope and change" or live in fear of Rahm Emmanuel's dirty tricks. He's using his veto-proof majority not to help America grow, but to ram his ideology down our throats. No deals, no art, just ugly divisiveness.

Sen. Chris Dodd Will Not Seek Re-election

The Democratic stalwart had been at the center of efforts to deal with the financial meltdown and played a prominent role in the debate over overhauling health care.

Connecticut Sen. Christopher Dodd, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, is set to announce he will not seek re-election this fall, Fox News confirmed early Wednesday.

The five-term Democrat's decision is the latest in a string of big-name Democratic retirements revealed on Tuesday as the party struggles to contend with a challenging political climate.

Word of his retirement came hours after North Dakota Democrat Byron Dorgan announced he will not seek re-election, stunning many in his party.

The departure of Dodd, first elected to the Senate in 1980, carries the most symbolic value because of his seniority and his close association with the financial system bailout and other economic policies.

Dodd, 66, is chairman of Senate Banking Committee, which was at the center of efforts to deal with the economic meltdown. And he has played a prominent role in the debate over overhauling health care, taking over for his friend Ted Kennedy during his illness and then after his death.

Given Dodd's bad poll standing, other Democrats have gone out of their way to give him the spotlight in hopes he could recover before November.

Officials: Protocol Followed, but System Failed to Prevent Terror Attempt

With a full-fledged review under way, top agencies are making immediate changes that suggest the system in place to flag suspected terrorists is fundamentally flawed -- even though officials say they followed procedure before a suspect armed with explosives boarded a Detroit-bound flight.

That appears to be the answer emerging from top agencies like the State Department in the aftermath of the failed Christmas Day airplane bombing, as officials explain how suspect Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab was able to clear security while armed with explosives and then board a flight bound for Detroit.

President Obama, who is meeting with agency heads Tuesday afternoon, said as much last week when he declared "systemic failure" allowed Abdulmutallab to board the plane bound for Detroit from Nigeria by way of Amsterdam. Other officials have since acknowledged that the system probably needs some adjustment.

"Systemic failure means that individuals probably weren't at fault, but that the systems that were put in place were not adequate to the task," said David Gordon, former director of policy planning at the State Department.

Obama was meeting Tuesday with top officials including Napolitano, Attorney General Eric Holder, CIA Director Leon Panetta, FBI Director Robert Mueller and counterterrorism adviser John "Oh, you mean THAT Nigerian!" Brennan.

GOP Chief: Republicans 'Screwed Up' After Reagan

In new book, Michael Steele says the GOP should acknowledge where "we most glaringly compromised our principles" in the past decade and hold its elected officials accountable.

WASHINGTON -- Republican Party Chairman Michael Steele offers a simple explanation for why the GOP may have lost touch with some Americans since the Ronald Reagan era: "We screwed up," he claims in a new book offering a blueprint for the party's resurgence.

That "we" includes the last two Republican presidents and the most recent Republican candidate for president.

In "Right Now: A 12-Step Program for Defeating the Obama Agenda," released Monday by Regnery Publishing, Steele says the GOP should acknowledge where "we most glaringly compromised our principles" in the past decade and hold its elected officials accountable.

"We must support Republican officials who assert these principles," he writes. "When elected Republicans vote against Republican principles, the voters must withhold their support -- withhold it vigorously and consistently."

Danish police have shot and wounded a man at the home of Kurt Westergaard, whose cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad sparked an international row.

Mr Westergaard scrambled into a panic room at his home in Aarhus after a man wielding an axe and a knife broke in.


I'm glad to see SOMEONE arms their police officers. Too bad citizens can't bear arms as well. Westergaard wouldn't need a panic room!

As A New Decade Dawns,...

I won't clog the blog with resolutions and achievement milestones - I'll complete whatever the Good Lord wants me to.

Instead, let's start this decade anew with a few pointers to steer us in the "right" direction:

1 - Stop adopting the policies of Truman/JFK-like Democrats.
It doesn't make you "centrists," and it only makes you right-wing only by default when
compared to the current batch of Socialists driving us to oblivion.
2 - While you're at it:
Rectify your issues with conservatives and Tea Partyists in time to put the brakes
on Obama's Socialist agenda. You've got less than 11 months to get your s**t together!
3 - Obama - Grow a Set!
You've been President for nearly a year now! Quit blaming everything on Bush. And admit
it already - we're at war with an ideology that hates us. Making nice-nice doesn't make it
better - large Daisy Cutters do. Remember, the last president to ignore this poking and
prodding terrorism (coincidentally, another Democrat) led this nation to the biggest knee to
the balls since Pearl Harbor!
4 - While you're asking Michelle to engage in testicular production:
STOP APOLOGIZING for being the leader of the greatest country on this planet!!! We beat
the Germans fair and square. We beat the Japanese fair and square. We stared down the
Berlin Wall by setting the better example. In fact, everywhere we've established democracy
has been at peace, not just with us but each other.


OK, America: the Bitter One has spoken! You have your marching orders! Just. Do. It!
