CRANBERRY, Pa. - A Pennsylvania state trooper was responding to a domestic call at a rural home when he got out of his police cruiser and was shot and killed.

State police say Trooper Paul G. Richey was shot shortly after he got to the home in Venango County on Wednesday morning. Richey had been a state trooper for 16 years.

State Police Commissioner Frank Pawlowski says Richey's sacrifice and service will not be forgotten.

The shooting happened in a rural area where homes are spread far apart and several schools were placed on lockdown as police searched for the gunman.

The area is near Oil City, which is about 80 miles north of Pittsburgh.

Officer Cassidy’s killer now faces death penalty

John "Jordan" Lewis, the baby-face North Philadelphia man whose string of six armed robberies ended with the Halloween 2007 slaying of Police Officer Chuck Cassidy, was found guilty of first-degree murder Thursday by a Philadelphia jury.

The 12 jurors deliberated about 2 1/4 hours before returning their decision shortly after 4 p.m. The forewoman - the first juror selected Nov. 4 - announced the verdict in a loud, strong voice without hesitation.

The standing-room-only courtroom crowd had been warned not to visibly react, and the room was silent except for the congratulatory sound of hands slapping shoulders.

The jury will return to the Criminal Justice Center this morning to begin hearing evidence about whether Lewis, 23, should be put to death by injection or spend his life in prison with no chance of parole.

The jury will hear evidence of aggravating factors in the murder of Cassidy, 54, that justify a death sentence or mitigating factors in Lewis' character or background that warrant a life term.

If the jury cannot reach a decision, Lewis will get life in prison.

PHILADELPHIA - A decorated Philadelphia police officer, once wounded in the line of duty, fired his gun at suspects in the city's Kensington section, authorities say.

It happened around 8:38 p.m. Tuesday on the 2000 block of E. Haggert Street.

Police said two males on a motorcycle tried to run down Officer Richard DeCoatsworth during a pursuit.

Police said DeCoatsworth fired one shot, hitting one of the suspects in the leg. The male was transported to Hahnemann University Hospital in serious condition.

Police said the second suspect, who tried to get away, was caught hiding out at his mother's house and is now in custody.

DeCoatsworth had garnered public attention when he was hit in the face by a shotgun blast during a car stop in October 2007.

He made news again in April when a man lunged for DeCoatsworth's gun and it went off during a struggle, wounding the man. The man ran off and was fatally shot by other officers in another confrontation.

DeCoatsworth has also received the Philadelphia Police Department's Medal of Valor Award.

The officer will be off the street while Tuesday night's shooting is investigated, per police department policy.

Police kill man after he grabs officer's gun

A man who exposed himself and then took a gun away from a police officer was shot to death by another officer in the city's Olney section last night, police said.

Two 35th Police District officers responded to a 911 call at 8:44 p.m. in the 6100 block of North Marshall Street and encountered a man exposing himself, police said.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately available, became combative with the officers, took the sidearm of one officer, and fired it once without hitting anyone, police said.

The clip fell out of the gun, and the man pointed the gun at one of the officers, police said.

The other officer fired once, striking the man in the chest, police said. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m.

Both officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center to be treated, police said.

As in every such situation, the officers will be assigned to desk duty while the shooting is investigated by the Internal Affairs Bureau.

Six Virginia State Police Chaplains resign over request not to reference Jesus Christ

From the story: Six of 17 Virginia State Police Chaplains have resigned over a request they not reference Jesus Christ at public events.

Instead, they've been instructed by the Superintendent to offer non-denominational prayers, a decision made following a recent ruling by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Chaplains are trained in ministry and counsel employees and their families. Troopers volunteer for the program which began nearly 30 years ago. The policy does not apply to private services like funerals.

In a statement Wednesday, Grayson County Delegate Bill Carrico called on the Superintendent to abandon, "this attack on Christianity."

Delegate Morgan Griffith says, to "require those troopers to disregard their own faith while serving violates their First Amendment rights and prevents them from serving effectively as chaplains. These men had little choice but to resign." Read more…

Female Phila. police officer dies in car crash

A Philadelphia police officer died last night after her cruiser collided with a sport-utility vehicle - allegedly driven by a drunken teenager - in the Mantua section of West Philadelphia.

According to initial reports, the officer and her male partner were trapped in their vehicle after the two-vehicle crash, which happened about 9 p.m. at 39th and Wallace Streets.

The crash was so severe - the SUV hit the passenger's side of the police vehicle at a high rate of speed - that the side at the point of impact was completely crushed in. The two officers had to be cut out with a Jaws of Life device.

Both officers were transferred to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where one died of massive head trauma and the other was listed in critical condition.

The dead officer was identified by police as Isabel Nazario, an 18-year veteran of the force. Her partner's name was not released.

Complete details of the crash were not available early this morning, but initial reports were that the driver of the SUV was an unlicensed teenager who fled after the crash. That driver, described by one official as 16-year-old boy with a record, was arrested after a short foot pursuit.

He was taken to an undisclosed hospital with what was described as non-life-threatening injuries.

When the magnitude of the crash became clear, Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey, police brass and other high-ranking city officials made their way to HUP, and the families of the two officers were summoned.

Also at HUP early this morning was a host of news media waiting for the commissioner to brief reporters with details of what happened. No further information was available.

The Homicide Unit will investigate the accident because it involves the death of an officer in the line of duty.

Last night's death was the second this year involving an officer killed in the line of duty.

On May 3, Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski was killed in Port Richmond while trying to arrest three suspects who had held up a Bank of America branch at gunpoint.

A 12-year veteran and a married father of three, Liczbinski was gunned down days before what would have been his 40th birthday by a desperate suspect wielding a Chinese-made SKS carbine.
