Geico voice-over actor fired after calling Tea Party group ‘mentally retarded’

A voice-over actor — best known for telling viewers they can save 15 percent or more on car insurance — says he lost his gig doing Geico commercials after leaving a voicemail with a group that organizes Tea Party events to ask how many of its employees are “mentally retarded.”

Los Angeles actor D.C. Douglas in a press release said he was dropped from the upcoming Geico “Shocking News” campaign after leaving a message with the press shop at FreedomWorks, a Washington-based organization led by former Republican leader Dick Armey that has been at the forefront of the Tea Party movement.

The Bitter American pours a steaming cup of Earl Grey into Rahm Emmanuel's lap by stating:

O.J. Simpson was sentenced Friday to at least 15 years in prison for armed robbery and kidnapping in a failed attempt to recover sports memorabilia from two collectibles dealers.

There will be the possibility of parole after six years, Judge Jackie Glass said.

His co-defendant Clarence "C.J." Stewart received the same sentence.

Before the judge handed down his sentence, Simpson apologized to her and the Las Vegas court after learning he won't be able to be freed on bail if he appeals.

Simpson appeared at the hearing in a blue prison jumpsuit, shackles and handcuffs.

"I stand before you today sorry," an emotional Simpson told Glass, fighting back tears. "I am apologetic to the people of Nevada. ... When I came here, I came here for a wedding. I didn't come to reclaim property."

He said he thought he was taking advantage of an opportunity to retrieve items that were rightfully his.

"In no way did I mean to hurt anybody, to steal anything from anyone," Simpson said. "I didn't want anybody else's stuff. I just wanted my own. I realize that I was stupid. I am sorry. I didn’t know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought I was retrieving property from friends. I’m sorry, I’m sorry for all of it."

Simpson's lawyers called his actions "stupid" and admitted he broke the law, but said they didn't rise to the level of criminality that would warrant a long prison sentence. They asked Glass to show mercy.

Glass responded during her statements that she believed "it was much more than stupidity."

Fred Goldman and his daughter, Kim Goldman, father and sister of murder victim Ron Goldman, the friend of Simpson's slain ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, were among the 15 members of the public to gain entry to the courtroom. Most of the 63 seats were taken by media, lawyers and family members of the defendants.

After the sentence was handed down, Fred Goldman told reporters that "this is a bittersweet moment" but spoke of the satisfaction of seeing Simpson — whom he called an "SOB" and a "monster" — in shackles.

"He'll be where he belongs, with others of his kind," Goldman said.

PHILADELPHIA - The parents charged in the starvation death of their bedridden daughter have sued the city, alleging that dangerous and reckless actions by several municipal employees and contract workers contributed to the girl's death.

The lawsuit outraged prosecutors, who have charged Andrea Kelly, 39, with murder in the death of 14-year-old Danieal Kelly, who had cerebral palsy and died two years ago from malnutrition and maggot-infested bedsores.

Danieal's father, Daniel Kelly of Darby, did not live with the girl but is charged with child endangerment.

The wrongful death suit, filed earlier this month, seeks reimbursement for medical bills, funeral costs and other expenses.

Lawyers said they filed the suit to protect the interests of the victim's siblings.

"The parents are not seeking any money from this," attorney Brian Mildenberg said. "The potential beneficiaries are the brothers and sisters and the parents, but the parents may be disqualified by a conviction or a civil finding of abandonment."

Prosecutors were angered.

"I think it's an obscenity. I cannot imagine that people in that situation who did what they did to their own daughter are attempting to profit from it," Assistant District Attorney Ed McCann, head of the city's homicide unit, told the Philadelphia Daily News.

Defendants include the city Department of Human Services, the state Department of Public Welfare, a behavioral health contractor and two now-fired city caseworkers who have been criminally charged in the case.

It was not immediately clear if the lawsuit was on behalf of all nine of Danieal's siblings. A separate suit filed on behalf of her oldest sibling, 19-year-old Troy Washington, names similar defendants and claims he suffered "substantial mental pain" from his sister's death.

Mendte charged with hacking into Alycia Lane’s e-mail

Former CBS3 anchor Larry Mendte was charged today with hacking into the personal e-mail of onetime colleague Alycia Lane 537 times from January to May of this year and sharing the information with a Philadelphia Daily News reporter.

"This case ... went well beyond just reading someone's e-mail," said a statement from acting U.S. Attorney Laurie Magid, who charged Mendte, 51, in an information with one felony count. He is not expected to surrender today. ("Paging Captain Obvious! Captain Obvious, line 1" - TM)

Mendte poked into the accounts from his seat at the CBS3 anchor desk, from his vacation home and even once from a computer at the Union League, the august Center City club, according to the information. Mendte is a member of the Union League, a spokeswoman confirmed.

Sources said Mendte was expected to plead guilty, and would face zero to six months in prison under sentencing guidelines.

The Daily News reporter was not identified by the U.S. Attorney's Office and Magid said the reporter would not be charged.

Mendte's lawyer, Michael A. Schwartz, said the charge against his client should come as no surprise. "Larry has been cooperating fully with the investigators. He continues to cooperate and will accept full responsibility for his actions."

Magid did not give a motive, other than to say the snooping was "an attempt to undermine his former colleague's ongoing legal cases."

On the morning of May 29, FBI agents armed with a search warrant arrived at the Chestnut Hill home Mendte shares with his wife, Fox29 anchor Dawn Stensland. Mendte went to work the next day, but left abruptly.

Sources said that software that secretly captures keystrokes - including passwords - had been installed on a CBS3 computer.

Mendte, 51, grossed more than $700,000 a year as CBS3's marquee anchor. The station fired Mendte three weeks after FBI agents seized his home computer.

CBS3 had no comment on the charges.

The U.S. Attorney's Office declined to address how Mendte had obtained Lane's password.

Mendte was fired nearly six months after CBS3 fired Lane, following her arrest in New York for allegedly hitting a cop.

In the information released by the FBI, Mendte read e-mails from two of Lane's e-mail accounts beginning as early as March 2006. He was charged only with the intrusions from January to May of this year, after Lane was fired.

Lane filed a lawsuit June 19 that claimed Mendte worked to discredit her behind the scenes and that CBS3 defamed her as she was fired from her $800,000-a-year job.

It is illegal under federal law to read another person's e-mails without permission. However, people charged with such a crime are rarely sentenced to prison, unless the crime includes significant economic or physical harm.

Lane had been vexed by apparent leaks of personal information for at least two years, according to her lawsuit against CBS3. In it, she alleges that certain details - including photos of Lane's meeting with Prince Albert of Monaco and the reaction of sports anchor Rich Eisen's wife to photos that Lane had sent - were leaked by someone who had read her e-mails.

Lane and Mendte coanchored CBS3's 6 and 11 p.m. news until Dec. 14. Lane was arrested early Dec. 16 in New York when she was accused of hitting a police officer. Felony charges against Lane have been dropped.

Union wonders why Bonds can't find work

The lack of offers to Barry Bonds will be examined by baseball's players' association as part of its annual review of the free-agent market, the union's head said yesterday.

Donald Fehr said yesterday his staff would examine the possibility of collusion against Bonds and others.

"We always look at the free-agent markets every year and make judgments about them, and if we come to the conclusion with respect to any player that there's a matter worth pursuing, we'll pursue it," he said. "But I'm not going to make any suggestions or accusations unless and until we come to that conclusion."

Less than two weeks before opening day, the 43-year-old home run king remains unsigned.

"He's in playing shape right now. He just hasn't hit off live pitching," Bonds' agent, Jeff Borris, said. "I've had conversations with Barry. It would probably take him about two weeks to get ready."

Bonds was indicted in November on four counts of perjury and one count of obstruction of justice, charges stemming from 2003 grand jury testimony in which he denied knowingly using illegal performance-enhancing drugs. The seven-time NL MVP has pleaded not guilty.

Aruba Prosecutors End Investigation Into Disappearance of American Teen Natalee Holloway

ORANJESTAD, Aruba — Authorities have closed the investigation into the disappearance of Natalee Holloway and do not have evidence to charge anyone, the prosecutors' office said Tuesday.

The three young men who were last seen with the Alabama teenager have all been notified that they will not be charged, the Public Prosecutor's Office said.

"The public prosecutor's office and the police have gone the extra mile and have exhausted all their powers and techniques in order to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the girl," it said.

The three suspects -- a Dutch college student and two Surinamese brothers -- were seen leaving a bar with Holloway the night she disappeared in May 2005. Police re-arrested them last month in a last-ditch effort to solve the case, but prosecutors said the men did not provide any new information under interrogation.

An attorney for two of the suspects, brothers Deepak and Satish Kalpoe, said prosecutors presented transcripts of online chat sessions that the suspects had with friends as new evidence.

"They tried to call it new, but it didn't have any incriminating points against our clients," attorney David Kock said. "It's like trying to say the Loch Ness monster exists."

In their statement, prosecutors said they still believe the three were involved in the disappearance, but cannot prove a crime was committed because Holloway's body was never recovered.

Prosecutors said they could reopen the case "if new serious evidence were to be found." The statute of limitations is six years for involuntary manslaughter and 12 years for homicide, they said.

Holloway, of Mountain Brook, Ala., was scheduled to return home with fellow high school classmates celebrating their graduation when she disappeared. She was 18 at the time.

One of the suspects, Joran Van der Sloot, has said he left her alone on a beach the night she vanished but does not know how she vanished.

No trace of Holloway has ever been found despite extensive searches involving hundreds of volunteers, Aruban soldiers, FBI agents and even Dutch F-16 jets with special equipment.
