Guts,..by Definition!

Mar 21, 2011 – 4:42 PM .

The college sports story of the weekend had nothing to do with the NCAA basketball tournament and everything to do with Anthony Robles, the Arizona State University wrestler who defeated reigning champ Matt McDonough from Iowa State on Saturday to become national champion in the 125-pound weight class.

A national championship is an impressive achievement for any athlete, but it's an awe-inspiring achievement by Robles, who was born with one leg.

Clearly one of the keys to Robles' athletic success is his attitude and determination. "I grew up like a normal kid," Robles told NCAA.com. "Yeah I was missing my leg, but that wasn't going to stop me from doing anything I wanted to do."

Good Show, Mr. Blair!

Tony Blair, who took Britain to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, is donating millions in earnings from his forthcoming memoir to a charity for injured troops.

The Royal British Legion said Monday that the former prime minister has agreed to give all proceeds from "A Journey" to its Battle Back Challenge Center. The center opens in 2012 and will provide state of the art sports facilities and rehabilitation services for seriously wounded personnel.

Publisher Random House paid an estimated $7.5 million for Blair's personal account of his time in power, due to be published next month.

Blair spokesman Matthew Doyle said Monday that Blair's donation includes the advance and all royalties.

Chris Simpkins, director-general of the Royal British Legion, said the organization "is delighted to accept this very generous donation."

Regardless of his politics, Blair took a lot of kicks to his privates for being one of the very few Euro "allies" to stand with the US against Islamofascism!

Dat's Who!

Note to Fat Andy Reid - BALLS! TAKE CHANCES! REAL QB LEADERSHIP!

MIAMI -- Reggie Wayne couldn't bring himself to admit he admired Sean Payton's intrepid call for an onside kick to open the second half of Super Bowl XLIV.

"I'm the one that's over here with my lip puffed out," Wayne said Sunday night in a tent outside Sun Life Stadium. "So apparently it was a good call."

Wayne and the rest of the Indianapolis Colts' offense were left standing on the sideline when the New Orleans Saints pulled off the big gamble.

Experience was supposed to be the difference-maker for the Colts. They'd been on this grand stage before. The Saints had not.

Yet, the Colts were caught unprepared.

The Saints recovered the kick and, six plays later, established themselves as an underdog on paper only. The Saints went on to win 31-17, and leave the Colts wondering about all the plays that got away.

"I didn't see it coming," Colts right tackle Ryan Diem said. "At that point in the game, I didn't expect them to do anything like that. The element of surprise got us."

Goodbye and Fare-Thee-Well!

TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Kurt Warner has called an end to one of the great storybook careers in NFL history. The 38-year-old quarterback announced his retirement from the game on Friday after a dozen years in a league that at first rejected him, then revered him as he came from nowhere to lead the lowly St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, winning the first of them.

Written off as a has-been, he rose again to lead the long-suffering Arizona Cardinals to the Super Bowl a year ago.

Warner, a man of deep faith who carried a Bible to each post-game news conference, walked away with a year left on a two-year, $23 million contract, knowing he still had the skills to play at the highest level.

"It's been an amazing ride," he said. "I don't think I could have dreamt it would have played out like it has, but I've been humbled every day that I woke up the last 12 years and amazed that God would choose to use me to do what he's given me the opportunity to do."

Warner had one of the greatest postseason performances ever in Arizona's 51-45 overtime wild card victory over Green Bay on Jan. 10, but sustained a brutal hit in the Cardinals' 45-14 divisional round loss at New Orleans six days later.

Good-Bye, God's Speed and Fare-Thee-Well

(Sigh),...another sports "good guy" leaves town:

The Phillies activated outfielder Raul Ibanez from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, designating catcher Chris Coste for assignment in order to make room on the 25-man roster.

Coste was then claimed off waivers by the Astros.

Before landing on the DL with a groin injury, Ibanez was scorching at the plate, batting .312 with 22 home runs and 59 RBIs in 62 games. The 37-year-old left fielder has not played since June 17.

Ibanez, slated to start in the All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on July 14, is sure to give a boost to a team that already leads the National League in runs scored with 444.

Throughout his 14-year career, Ibanez sports a .287 batting average and 204 home runs.
