Jim Johnson's Important Life

We're taught in journalism school to be objective about the people we cover on a daily basis.

Some people we encounter, however, make that rule impossible to follow.

Jim Johnson was one of those people.

Six months ago I used this space to say that I was cheering from the press box for the Eagles' defensive coordinator to beat cancer. I said I'd gladly give him a standing ovation if he did so.

We found out early last evening that Johnson, like so many others, had lost his battle with metastatic melanoma.

This morning, I give Jim Johnson a standing ovation anyway because I know even more about the man than I did before yesterday.

I already knew, of course, that Jim Johnson was a great coach. Plenty of statistics support that fact.

I also knew he was a tremendous man from my personal encounters with Johnson. The last one came a few months ago when Johnson courageously tried to continue coaching through his chemotherapy treatments at the Eagles' post-draft camp.

Jim and I made eye contact after a Saturday morning practice at the NovaCare Complex. I smiled and told him how good it was to see him.

He smiled back.

"It's good to see you," he said.

I could tell he meant it. I could tell how happy he was to be coaching football, too.

It says on Jackie Robinson's tombstone that "a life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives."

Jim Johnson's life was incredibly important.

Good Samaritans Not Welcome in Philly?

With apologies to both Wyatt and Captain America, hoping this story isn't reflective of either service as a whole,...

I'm telling this story because its been eating at me since it occurred last Friday afternoon. At that time, one of my co-workers, a fellow supervisor we'll call "FCW" was returning from HUP (Univ of Penn's Hospital for non-Philadelphians) after demonstrating our new neo-natal ambulance to the HUP brass.

Stopping at an traffic light in West Philly, he observed a middle-aged man come to a stop in the intersection, gasp for breath, and promptly pass out in the street. FCW promptly pulled his well-marked company vehicle into a position in the intersection to protect the man, called 9-1-1, and began to tend to his injuries. FCW was helped, by the way, be several more-than-willing bystanders as he placed a neck collar on the patient, gave him oxygen and started to tend to a large laceration on his forehead and a probable broken nose.

A few moments later, a first responder engine, fire medic unit, and police patrol car arrived on the scene. You'd think they would thank FCW and assume care of this patient from him? NOPE!

The paramedic immediately began to question why FCW would stabilize the patient's neck (its a PA state Department of Health protocol to assume a neck injury when someone falls, BTW), why he would place the patient on "high-flow" oxygen (he had labored breathing and evidence of poor oxygenation in his blood) and in general questioned FCW's credentials as an EMT (he's been an active EMT-Basic for more than a decade).

It only gets worse! The medic then removed the oxygen mask from the patient and berated him to get up and WALK to the stretcher! Once accomplished, the same medic proceeded to take off the protective neck collar as well. Oh, BTW, her partner? He just stood around the stretcher with his hands in his pocket. You see, the Philadelphia Fire Department can't afford to staff each ambulance with TWO paramedics anymore. Instead, many are staffed with one paramedic and one firefighter-EMT (some with just two FF/EMTs) who is usually platooned to the medic truck against his or her will. Philly is a traditional town and firefighters should be fighting fires. I don't
debate that wisdom - I grew up with it.

Once loaded into the medic unit, they crew then proceeded not back towards HUP, but instead towards Mercy Hospital of Philadelphia (formerly Misericordia), which is a local community hospital (another questionable decision and probably another PA protocol violation).

The first responder engine crew? Well, they helped FCW put his first aid bag back together and mumbled some apologies about the treatment he just got. But it didn't end there,..

Remember at the beginning of this sick tale? FCW parked his vehicle IN THE INTERSECTION to protect someone lying in the street from being run over. Apparently, that wasn't good enough for the district patrol officer. As FCW was cleaning up the scene, the officer asked him to move his vehicle out of the intersection, berating him for blocking the intersection to begin with.

Today came the final insult: FCW was notified by the district desk sergeant that he'll be cited by mail for blocking the intersection!

And this is the Philadelphia that "loves you back?" I'm counting the days when I make settlement on my nice suburban home!!

Montoya's mistake defied logic

INDIANAPOLIS -- Juan Pablo Montoya was well on his way to winning the Allstate 400 at the Brickyard like Secretariat in the Belmont.

He had the field covered, including winner Jimmie Johnson and runner-up Mark Martin.

Montoya, the Colombian flash, was cruising. A historic victory was only laps away.

An Indy 500 winner was going to win the NASCAR race at the Brickyard for the first time. Everything was perfect Sunday in the No. 42 Chevy.

Just play it safe. No chances.

Crew chief Brian Pattie had a message for his driver: "Nobody close man. Focus on the track."

Apparently, that message was lost in translation.

The impossible happened, a mistake beyond belief. It defied logic.

Montoya was caught speeding on pit road with 26 laps to go. On his final stop, Montoya came in a little too hot, not once, but twice.

Pit road has eight zones where the speed is measured. The speed limit in the pits at Indy is 55 mph. NASCAR gives the drivers a 5 mph cushion.

Darby said Montoya was caught over the cushion in Zones 2 and 4. Officially, the speed was recorded at 60.06 mph in Zone 2 and 60.11 mph in Zone 4.

"And he was already pushing it," Darby said. "He was over 59 miles per hour in most of the other zones."

THAT'S RIGHT, FOLKS. A NASCAR DRIVER WAS DISQUALIFIED FOR - GET THIS - SPEEDING!!!!! WHISKEY-TANGO-FOXTROT??

ABC, CBS and NBC all led Friday night with President Obama’s decision to appear in the White House press room to backtrack on the fury he inflamed by presuming “stupidity” by the police in the Professor Henry Gates alleged “racial profiling” incident, but only Katie Couric trumpeted Obama’s appearance in the White House briefing room -- which the CBS Evening News ran for an uninterrupted four solid minutes -- as “extraordinary” and “really unprecedented,” before she pouted over how “the timing could not be worse. Just as he was pushing so hard for health care reform and having some pretty serious setbacks.”

She pressed Bob Schieffier to provide Obama with guidance to get back on track on health care: “And how do you think the President can, if he can, resuscitate this whole effort?” Schieffer advised the obvious: “What he's got to do, I think now, is set out some specific things that he wants them to do and then push them to do it.” (Between the four minutes of Obama and when Couric turned to Schieffer, CBS aired a piece from reporter Bill Whitaker on why blacks fear the police.)

Police kill man after he grabs officer's gun

A man who exposed himself and then took a gun away from a police officer was shot to death by another officer in the city's Olney section last night, police said.

Two 35th Police District officers responded to a 911 call at 8:44 p.m. in the 6100 block of North Marshall Street and encountered a man exposing himself, police said.

The man, whose name and age were not immediately available, became combative with the officers, took the sidearm of one officer, and fired it once without hitting anyone, police said.

The clip fell out of the gun, and the man pointed the gun at one of the officers, police said.

The other officer fired once, striking the man in the chest, police said. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene at 8:45 p.m.

Both officers sustained minor injuries and were taken to Albert Einstein Medical Center to be treated, police said.

As in every such situation, the officers will be assigned to desk duty while the shooting is investigated by the Internal Affairs Bureau.

Despite the efforts and significant contribution of the new members, NATO today seems weaker than when we joined. In many of our countries it is perceived as less and less relevant - and we feel it. Although we are full members, people question whether NATO would be willing and able to come to our defense in some future crises.

Many in the region are looking with hope to the Obama Administration to restore the Atlantic relationship as a moral compass for their domestic as well as foreign policies. A strong commitment to common liberal democratic values is essential to our countries. We know from our own historical experience the difference between when the United States stood up for its liberal democratic values and when it did not. Our region suffered when the United States succumbed to "realism" at Yalta. And it benefited when the United States used its power to fight for principle. That was critical during the Cold War and in opening the doors of NATO. Had a "realist" view prevailed in the early 1990s, we would not be in NATO today and the idea of a Europe whole, free, and at peace would be a distant dream.

Famed CBS News Anchorman Walter Cronkite Dies at 92

NEW YORK — Cronkite was the broadcaster to whom the title "anchorman" was first applied, and he came so identified in that role that eventually his own name became the term for the job in other languages. (Swedish anchors are known as Kronkiters; In Holland, they are Cronkiters.)

Walter Cronkite, the premier TV anchorman of the U.S. networks' golden age who reported a tumultuous time with reassuring authority and came to be called "the most trusted man in America," died Friday. He was 92.

Cronkite's longtime chief of staff, Marlene Adler, said Cronkite died at 7:42 p.m. at his Manhattan home surrounded by family. She said the cause of death was cerebral vascular disease.

Adler said, "I have to go now" before breaking down into what sounded like a sob. She said she had no further comment.

Cronkite was the face of the "CBS Evening News" from 1962 to 1981, when stories ranged from the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. to racial and anti-war riots, Watergate and the Iranian hostage crisis.

It was Cronkite who read the bulletins coming from Dallas when Kennedy was shot Nov. 22, 1963, interrupting a live CBS-TV broadcast of the soap opera "As the World Turns."

Saudi Family Sues Genie for Harassment

(July 15) -- A family in Saudi Arabia has taken a genie to court, alleging theft and harassment, according to local media.
The lawsuit filed in Shariah court accuses the genie of leaving them threatening voicemails, stealing their cell phones and hurling rocks at them when they leave their house at night, said Al-Watan newspaper.

An investigation was under way, local court officials said.
"We have to verify the truthfulness of this case despite the difficulty of doing so," Sheikh Amr Al Salmi, the head of the court, told Al-Watan. "What makes this case and complaint more interesting is that it wasn't filed by just one person. Every member of the family is part of this case."
The family, which has lived in the same house near the holy city of Medina for 15 years, said it became aware of the spirit in the past two years.

"We began hearing strange noises," the head of the family, who requested anonymity, told Al-Watan. "In the beginning, we didn't take it seriously, but after that, stranger things started happening and the children got really scared when the genie began throwing stones."
A local charity has moved the family to a temporary residence while a court investigates, the newspaper said.
In Islamic cultures, a belief in genies, or jinns, is common.
Genies not only appear in pre-Islamic fiction such as "Arabian Nights," but are also mentioned in the Quran.
Many Saudis believe invisible genies live among them and are capable of demonic possession and revenge.

Palin Op-Ed Blasts Obama: A Prelude to 2012?

There are at least two possibilities. Either Sarah Palin is a very quick learner or she employs a really good ghostwriter. Even if it's the latter, she's demonstrated with an op-ed article in the Washington Post Tuesday that she's not the total dunce many of us have pictured.

This is the first indication Palin was even aware the Washington Post existed, but her piece is a pretty effective way to show the world she's a political force that no one should underestimate: "At the risk of disappointing the chattering class," she writes, "let me make clear what is foremost on my mind and where my focus will be."

As a card-carrying member of the "chattering class," let me note she's taking on a hefty subject, the complex "cap and trade" plan that plenty of chatterers have trouble understanding. Even more importantly, she's deftly pushing the buttons of every conservative, laying out the Republican argument that using "cap and trade" to control greenhouse gases would be "an enormous threat to our economy."

There's also the boilerplate call to end our reliance on foreign oil by tapping into domestic sources of coal and oil. For good measure, she makes sure her message reaches the religious right: "We are ripe for economic growth and energy independence if we responsibly tap the resources that God created right underfoot on American soil."

So now we know that by resigning as governor of Alaska, Palin had no intention of retiring -- or of being shy and retiring. We can only assume that we will be seeing and hearing more of her forays into substance. It's the best way to rehabilitate her ditzy image -- an image created because "many in the media would rather focus on the personality-driven gossip of the day than on the gravity of these challenges." (And MSMSNBC, CeeNoNews, CeeBS, et al)

In case anyone doubts the presidential ambition of her save-the-economy essay, the last words should clear things up: "Yes we can. Just not with Barack Obama's energy cap-and-tax plan." Sarah Palin is serving notice that it's a long while till 2012, with plenty of time to repair an image or, for that matter, create an entirely different one.

Fumo Sentenced To 55
Months In Prison

PHILADELPHIA - A federal judge has sentenced former Pennsylvania Sen. Vince Fumo to 55 months in prison for corruption.

In additon to prison, the judge ordered Fumo to pay about $2 million restitution, including $1.3 million to the Senate, plus pay $411,000 in fines and $676,519 to Fumo's nonprofit group known as Citizens Alliance for Better Neighborhoods.

He must surrender himself to prison by August 31 to begin serving his 4 years and 7 months sentence.

Federal prosecutors say the wealthy Fumo stole not because he needed money but because "he was drunk with power." They had sought a sentence of more than 15 years.

U.S. District Judge Ronald Buckwalter departed down from the guideline range of about 10 to 20 years, citing Fumo's public service.

His voice breaking, Fumo told the judge he loved his job and never intended to steal from the Senate.

Fumo misappropriated millions of dollars from the state and two nonprofits. A jury found the Philadelphia Democrat used their coffers to clean his mansion, charter yachts, and spy on an ex-girlfriend and political foes.

Fumo survived two earlier indictments in his 30-year political career.

Phillies activate Ibanez from DL
Club loses Coste to waivers to make room for slugger

The Phillies activated outfielder Raul Ibanez from the 15-day disabled list on Friday, designating catcher Chris Coste for assignment in order to make room on the 25-man roster.

Coste was then claimed off waivers by the Astros.

Before landing on the DL with a groin injury, Ibanez was scorching at the plate, batting .312 with 22 home runs and 59 RBIs in 62 games. The 37-year-old left fielder has not played since June 17.

Ibanez, slated to start in the All-Star Game at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on July 14, is sure to give a boost to a team that already leads the National League in runs scored with 444.

Throughout his 14-year career, Ibanez sports a .287 batting average and 204 home runs.

MOSCOW - July 10, 2009 -- A Russian TV channel has cut a segment of the ribald U.S. cartoon comedy "South Park" that appeared to mock Vladimir Putin, a news agency reported.

The channel "2X2" cut material from the show that aired Tuesday, portraying Putin as a greedy and desperate leader, Novy Region reported Thursday. The decision prompted criticism and furious discussion on Russia blogs.

It was unclear whether the decision, involving an episode that originally aired in the United States in 2005, was made by channel executives or regulators. Channel executives could not be reached for comment Friday.

A spokesman with Russia's broadcast regulator, Rosskomnadzor, said he knew nothing of the incident. (Schu-u-lt-z-z-z!)

"We have never interfered with editorial decisions," Yevgeny Strelchik said.

The channel has been threatened with closure at least twice before for broadcasting what material regulators deem extremist. The network received warnings from the government last year for "promoting immorality and violence" and again in September 2008 for "overt propaganda of homosexuality and pedophilia."

Religious groups have also sought to have the station's license revoked.

The Soviet collapse loosened the reins on news and information, and open mocking of government officials - Kremlin or otherwise - was popular in the 1990s. Under Putin's presidency, however, there's been a noticeable shift away from biting satire.

The channel NTV was forced to pull its satirical puppet show "Kukly" in 2002 after the Kremlin objected to the excessive lampooning of Putin.

Putin, who is now prime minister, has been instrumental in returning economic stability to Russia but critics say that his methods, which leave little room for public dissent, border on authoritarian.

Internet publications and blogs are among the last outlets for unfettered commentary and satire in Russian, and commentators on Russia's most popular blogging service, Live Journal, vented their anger after news of the "South Park" censorship leaked out.

"Congratulations, Vladimir Vladimirovich," wrote one blogger, manhater-1138, referring to Putin by his name and his patryonimc. "You have become pornography."

Oleg Kuvaev, a blogger and online animated filmmaker, said on his Web site that the decision would only attract more attention to the channel.

"It's stupid to cut things this way, because the result is reverse - a mediocre scene attracts more interest," he wrote.

PHILADELPHIA -- Shane Victorino is headed to St. Louis.

The Phillies outfielder won the National League's All-Star Game Sprint Final Vote at MLB.com for the final roster spot on the NL All-Star team. Victorino beat Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval in a close vote that seesawed since they were named two of the league's five candidates on Sunday. Detroit's Brandon Inge, Victorino's partner in their "Bran-Torino" push, won the final American League spot.

Victorino took the lead from Sandoval earlier on Thursday.

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, D-backs third baseman Mark Reynolds and Nationals shortstop Cristian Guzman rounded out the NL candidates.

Victorino made a big effort to win. He campaigned throughout Philadelphia, even knocking on doors with Mayor Michael Nutter in South Philadelphia. He appeared on local and national TV and radio. He appeared in commercials. The Phillies promoted him heavily throughout the ballpark, including having ballgirls wear Hawaiian shirts.

Hundreds Protest in Iran, Defy Threats of Further Crackdown

Iranian police fired shots in the air and tear gas into crowds as hundreds of people gathered near Tehran University Thursday, in the latest clash between pro-reform demonstrators and Iranian authorities.

"Police used tear gas twice to disperse the crowd. There was also many Basij militia on motorbikes patrolling the area," a witness told Reuters.

Witnesses also said they saw police detaining several protesters.

Hundreds of young men and women chanted "death to the dictator" and fled baton-wielding police in the capital as opposition activists sought to revive street protests despite authorities' vows to "smash" any new marches.
