Giving time over to the
Stop the ACLU blogburst:
This past Tuesday, many people were able to exercise their right to vote (preferably for a Republican).
Ever notice a certain twisted dichotomy to our electoral process? In order to vote,
you must be a US citizen, right?
To be a US citizen, you must:
Applicants for naturalization must be able to read, write, speak, and understand words in ordinary usage in the English language. Applicants exempt from this requirement are those who on the date of filing:
*
have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 15 years and are over 55 years of age;
*
have been residing in the United States subsequent to a lawful admission for permanent residence for at least 20 years and are over 50 years of age; or
*
have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment, where the impairment affects the applicantÂs ability to learn English.
Why, then, are your ballots bilingual (English/Spanish)?So asks the group,

A Nation Divided:
The Consequences of Bilingual Ballots
Five Reasons Why Congress Should Not Renew the Bilingual Voting Provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
(Action Alert: The House Judiciary committee will hold hearings on renewal of the bilingual ballot provisions of the Voting Rights Act.
Click here to send a free fax to your congressmen urging them to oppose bilingual ballots.)1) There is No Justification for Bilingual Ballots & Election Materials
2) Bilingual Ballot Requirements are Arbitrary and Wasteful
3) Bilingual Ballots are an Un-funded Mandate on Local Governments
4) Bilingual Ballots increase the likelihood of Errors and Vote Fraud
5) Bilingual Ballots are a Growing Burden
Good points,..makes you think we "right-thinking" people are in the clear about this, right?Nope,.Along come the ACLU to ruin any chance of logical thinking coinciding with Constitutional law:Dear Representative:
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) strongly urges you to vote in favor of a critical civil rights amendment to be offered by Representatives Menendez (D-NJ), DeLauro (D-CT), and Johnson (D-TX) to strengthen the Help America Vote Act of 2001, H.R. 3295. This bill will be considered in the House tomorrow. Should the amendment fail, we urge you to oppose the bill because it would fail to establish uniform standards for voting technology, meaningfully increase accessibility to the ballot box for the disabled
and those with limited English proficiency, ensure access to provisional balloting, and provide adequate purge protections.
If that isn't enough, the ACLU pushes the following contradictory rule (that is contradicts the rules of US citizenship):
4. Bilingual Voting Materials Requirement, 42 U.S.C. ' 1973aa-1aCertain states and political subdivisions are required by 42 U.S.C. ' 1973aa-1a to provide voting materials in languages other than English. While there are several tests for "coverage," the requirement is imposed upon jurisdictions with significant language minority populations who are limited-English proficient and where the illiteracy rate of the language minority is higher than the national rate. Covered jurisdictions are required to furnish voting materials in the language of the applicable minority group as well as in English. Jurisdictions required to provide bilingual election procedures for one or more language minorities include the entire states of California, New Mexico, and Texas, and several hundred counties and townships in Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Utah, and Washington. 67 Fed. Reg. 48872 (July 26, 2002).
The bilingual voting materials requirement is scheduled to expire in August 2007.TrekMedic muses:Fellow "right-minded" thinkers, we need to have this portion of the Voter's Rights Act of 1965 repealed in 2007! It's contradictory to that which defines us as US citizens, its divides (some would say "Balkanizes") us as a nation, and it further promulgates the ACLU/DNC philosophy of inclusion in a warped Utopian Socialist state!DISCLAIMER:
