A Final (and Total) Note on Memorial Day

Jean Sara Rohe, pay some f**king attention to this:

Physician,..Kill Thyself??

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. — An attorney for Jack Kevorkian said the assisted-suicide advocate will probably not survive another year if kept in prison, as he again asked the state to grant his client a pardon or commute his sentence.

Lawyer Mayer Morganroth said he applied to the state Parole Board and Gov. Jennifer Granholm on Friday seeking a pardon, parole or commutation, citing the 77-year-old's deteriorating health.

"Kevorkian has become increasingly frail and has fallen twice, injuring his wrist and fracturing two ribs," Morganroth said in a statement.

The former doctor is serving a 10- to 25-year sentence for second-degree murder for giving a fatal injection of drugs in 1998. He is eligible for parole in 2007.

The TrekMedic muses:

Somewhere in the story is a great karmic joke, huh?

DoubleStandard?dradnatSelbuoD at the Inkwaster

Ok,..the editors of the Inkwaster can't have it both ways:

Destroy the Second Amendment:

The National Rifle Association has stock arguments it uses when anyone suggests new firearm regulations, including one-handgun-per-month purchase limits.

Two bills languishing in Pennsylvania propose such a limit. The legislation is meant to make it harder to buy handguns - the weapon most often used in Philadelphia homicides - through a transaction known as a straw purchase.

In a straw-purchase scheme, a felon, barred by law from buying guns, recruits someone who can legally buy numerous guns at one time. The intermediary fills out forms, passes a background check, purchases the guns, then gives them to the felon, who uses them to commit crimes or illegally resells them for a big profit.

Handguns bought this way don't end up in the homes of law-abiding citizens who want to defend their families against intruders.

but,....Defend the First Amendment:

For the families of nearly 800 American soldiers, this Memorial Day has taken on a deeply personal and painful significance over the one celebrated just one year ago.

Their loved ones were among those killed in the Iraq conflict over the last year, including war-zone deaths that touched more than two-dozen homes across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

Today, the nation honors these newly fallen soldiers, along with all other Americans who gave - in Abraham Lincoln's ringing words at Gettysburg - their "last full measure of devotion" in the nation's defense.

While every family is diminished by these soldiers' sacrifice, every American is strengthened by the fact of the soldiers' service.

At parades and cemetery services - and maybe even during a quiet moment at a picnic, or a stroll along a stretch of beach - the vast majority of citizens who never get to don a uniform have a chance to express their gratitude.

The tradition dates to the post-Civil War years when "Decoration Day" was named after the practice of placing flowers and flags on soldiers' graves.

The day tends to be one for the warriors, not the wars. It's a brief pause (along with the unofficial start of summer) when every attempt should be made to put aside misgivings about the particular conflict that claimed a life. Ask the Vietnam veterans gathered at today's memorials.

That's as good a policy this year as any, given that there is no end in sight to the difficult and controversial Iraq mission.

One way not to honor these warriors, though, is to stamp out the democratic freedoms they volunteered to defend.

The awful and cruel protests at soldiers' funerals by homophobic religious groups are a fitting test of the nation's adherence to its values. Unfortunately, lawmakers in state capitals and the Congress are failing that test.

To the Inky editors: the Bill of Rights isn't subject to your moral relativism! The Second Amendment was, in part, put in place to DEFEND the First Amendment, as were the subsequent amendments. To destroy one is to set of a chain reaction of anarchy in the country!!

More Reasons to Close the Border!

Major HT to ALa (her blondeness) for this one:

Why should we have secure borders?

Is it because we hate Mexicans? Of course not.
Is it because we are against legal immigration? Of course not?
Is it because we are fear-mongering racists? uh, no.

Is it because TERRORISTS can come across the border as easily as any paid coyote can? YES!

Watch the newscast:

I've harped and harped about all of the Korans, Spanish-to-Arabic dictionaries, and Arabic-language maps of the Southwest US. Now, this!

More Signs of the Decline of Western Civilization (5/26/06 Version)

JOHN McCAIN IS, without a doubt, heroic.

Disagree with his politics, mistrust his shifting political alliances, but no one who's benefited from the tortured sacrifices he made at the Hanoi Hilton should question his integrity. How can we, whole in body and strangers to the hell he experienced, challenge this patriot? To do so indicates a fundamental inhumanity.

That aptly describes the young woman who stood up last week and ridiculed the senator from Arizona. Jean Sara Rohe, a graduating senior at the New School in New York, introduced McCain before he delivered his commencement address.

Ms. Rohe took the opportunity to attack McCain because he supports the war in Iraq, making him a proxy for the president she and her ilk so obviously detest. Her words, dripping with the elite disdain perfected by liberals, is an example of how the pampered progeny of the boomers are always demanding rights without acknowledging prior debts.

(snip)

The disrespect didn't stop there. At one point, the school's president, Bob Kerrey, admonished the crowd to let McCain speak, dryly noting that it takes courage to stand at a lectern but none to scream from the crowd.

The response? Kerrey, who left part of his own leg on a battlefield in Vietnam and who received the Medal of Honor, was called a "war criminal." Given the caliber of the accuser, this is actually high praise.

The TrekMedic seethes:

This is just another example of the liberal indoctrination that passes for education in our universities. It would be easy to blow off Ms. Rohe's remarks if she acted alone and in a fit of pique. But as Ms. Flowers points out, her views were echoed by the student body of the school.

If that isn't enough, the "usual suspects" have rallied around this miscreant. Arianna Huffington calls her act "A New (School) Role Model of Fearlessness."

God, does it ever stop?

From the "Gargle with Absorbine Jr" Files"

Sometimes, people need to think a little before they speak:

MILLVILLE, N.J. - Hours before he was to take the stand yesterday, a defendant in a sex-assault case apparently killed his wife and two young children before turning a shotgun on himself, authorities said.

The bodies of Scott McCarter, 40; his wife, Wendy, 35, and their children, Scotty, 12, and Melanie, 8, were found by a friend who went to check on McCarter when he didn't show up in court.

The friend arrived at the couple's neatly kept ranch house on the outskirts of town to find all four dead.

McCarter was sitting in a living-room chair with the shotgun by his side; the others were in their beds, according to Cumberland County Prosecutor Ronald Casella.

"It would appear to have been a murder-suicide, where his family - his wife and the two children - were murdered first and then he turned the gun on him," said Casella.

There was no suicide note and no sign of forced entry or a struggle, he said.

Authorities weren't sure whether the shootings had been triggered by the court case. McCarter had been accused of molesting two teenagers - one of whom was the daughter of his then-girlfriend, Wendy.

He faced up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

No s**t, Mr. Casella! It would be hard to murder his wife and children if he committed suicide first, right? (And maybe he should have, too!)

Conservatives ROCK!!

John J. Miller at the National Review has posted the 50 Greatest Conservative Rock Songs:

Here's the Top 10, click on the link for the rest:

1. “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” by The Who. The Who - The Kids Are Alright - Won't Get Fooled Again ;
The conservative movement is full of disillusioned revolutionaries; this could be their theme song, an oath that swears off naïve idealism once and for all. “There’s nothing in the streets / Looks any different to me / And the slogans are replaced, by-the-bye. . . . Meet the new boss / Same as the old boss.” The instantly recognizable synthesizer intro, Pete Townshend’s ringing guitar, Keith Moon’s pounding drums, and Roger Daltrey’s wailing vocals make this one of the most explosive rock anthems ever recorded — the best number by a big band, and a classic for conservatives.

2. “Taxman,” by The Beatles.
A George Harrison masterpiece with a famous guitar riff (which was actually played by Paul McCartney): “If you drive a car, I’ll tax the street / If you try to sit, I’ll tax your seat / If you get too cold, I’ll tax the heat / If you take a walk, I’ll tax your feet.” The song closes with a humorous jab at death taxes: “Now my advice for those who die / Declare the pennies on your eyes.”

3. “Sympathy for the Devil,” by The Rolling Stones. The Rolling Stones - Sympathy for the Devil Remixes - EP - Sympathy for the Devil ;
Don’t be misled by the title; this song is The Screwtape Letters of rock. The devil is a tempter who leans hard on moral relativism — he will try to make you think that “every cop is a criminal / And all the sinners saints.” What’s more, he is the sinister inspiration for the cruelties of Bolshevism: “I stuck around St. Petersburg / When I saw it was a time for a change / Killed the czar and his ministers / Anastasia screamed in vain.”

4. “Sweet Home Alabama,” by Lynyrd Skynyrd. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Then and Now - Sweet Home Alabama ;
A tribute to the region of America that liberals love to loathe, taking a shot at Neil Young’s Canadian arrogance along the way: “A Southern man don’t need him around anyhow.”

5. “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” by The Beach Boys. The Beach Boys - Good Vibrations: Thirty Years of the Beach Boys - Wouldn't It Be Nice ;
Pro-abstinence and pro-marriage: “Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray it might come true / Baby then there wouldn’t be a single thing we couldn’t do / We could be married / And then we’d be happy.”

6. “Gloria,” by U2. U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky - Gloria ;
Just because a rock song is about faith doesn’t mean that it’s conservative. But what about a rock song that’s about faith and whose chorus is in Latin? That’s beautifully reactionary: “Gloria / In te domine / Gloria / Exultate.”

7. “Revolution,” by The Beatles.
“You say you want a revolution / Well you know / We all want to change the world . . . Don’t you know you can count me out?” What’s more, Communism isn’t even cool: “If you go carrying pictures of Chairman Mao / You ain’t going to make it with anyone anyhow.” (Someone tell the Che Guevara crowd.)

8. “Bodies,” by The Sex Pistols. Sex Pistols - Filthy Lucre Live - Bodies ;
Violent and vulgar, but also a searing anti-abortion anthem by the quintessential punk band: “It’s not an animal / It’s an abortion.”

9. “Don’t Tread on Me,” by Metallica.
A head-banging tribute to the doctrine of peace through strength, written in response to the first Gulf War: “So be it / Threaten no more / To secure peace is to prepare for war.”

10. “20th Century Man,” by The Kinks. The Kinks - The Kinks' Greatest: Celluloid Heroes - 20th Century Man ;
“You keep all your smart modern writers / Give me William Shakespeare / You keep all your smart modern painters / I’ll take Rembrandt, Titian, da Vinci, and Gainsborough. . . . I was born in a welfare state / Ruled by bureaucracy / Controlled by civil servants / And people dressed in grey / Got no privacy got no liberty / ’Cause the 20th-century people / Took it all away from me.”

A Free Press in Philly,..but at What Price?

Well,.it finally happened. Brian Tierney and a group of local investors, purchased the Inkwaster and Daily Fishwrapper from Knight-Ridder and McClatchy.

Here's the good:

The local owners will keep the company, Philadelphia Media Holdings, privately owned. That means:

After all, in an era of Wall Street-backed media conglomerates, what Tierney was trying to do - take back hometown control of Philadelphia's two newspapers - was simply something that wasn't done. At least, that's what people thought - before they actually talked with Tierney.

No quarterly bottom line, no pandering to stockholders, just running a Philly paper the Philly way!

Now, the bad news:

I've always been an admirer of Brian Tierney. He's pushed his way through the bulls**t for years. So, it puzzles me that the local media, while constantly harping that he has ties to the Republican Party, got him to capitulate editorial control:

"How does this guy go from being our slayer to being our savior?"

Tierney, a longtime Republican activist, for years ran a public-relations firm that employed what reporters viewed as hardball tactics in representing the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and other major local institutions that were the focus of critical news stories.

But he said yesterday, over and over again, that, as the co-owner of The Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, he would respect the editorial independence of the publisher, editors and reporters.

That promise, he noted, was written into the partnership agreement signed by the new owner-investors, which states that "no member shall attempt to influence" news articles.

Although media outlets are frequently accused of one form of bias or another, it is a basic value of American journalism that the newsroom should be independent of the economic or political interests of those who own it.

Tierney said that he and his partners recognized that the fastest way to hurt their investment would be to jeopardize editorial independence.

So,..Brian, as I understand it, its perfectly OK for a group of fifth columnists and Wall Street hacks to push a socialist agenda in our press media (the Inkwaster showered John Kerry with unending praise in the months leading up to November 2004. So much for objectivity, huh?), but rather than stick your neck out and push the two Philly papers back towards the middle ground, you've given your balls over to the same idiots who've ruined what's left of the press' journalistic integrity?? Get your testicles back from the unions who run the Inkwaster and I'll give you my 50 cents again!

'Nuff said!

And They Should Still Keep Their Mouths Shut!

NASHVILLE (Billboard) - Disappointing airplay for the first two singles from the new album by the Dixie Chicks exposes a deep -- and seemingly growing -- rift between the trio and the country radio market that helped turn the group into superstars.

"Taking the Long Way," due out May 23, is the band's first album since singer Natalie Maines sparked a major controversy in 2003 by declaring that she was ashamed to hail from the same state as fellow Texan President George W. Bush. Radio boycotts ensued, and many fans abandoned the band.

The first single, "Not Ready to Make Nice," peaked at No. 36 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, beginning its descent after just seven weeks. The second single, "Everybody Knows," is now at No. 50, down two places in its fourth week.

"Not Ready to Make Nice" performed only slightly better at adult contemporary radio, peaking at No. 32 on the AC chart and falling off after six weeks.

The Trekmedic notes:

I'm all for the First Amendment. I agreed to disagree with Green Day's "American Idiot." I believe Neil Young has the right to release a new anti-war(Bush) album and make a fool of himself in the process. But, at the end of the day, capitalism and the almighty greenback still rules the day, right?

Hope Yet for a Free Press in Philadelphia!

A deal is "imminent" for a local group headed by longtime public-relations executive Brian Tierney to buy the Daily News and the Inquirer, according to a source familiar with the negotiations with California-based McClatchy Co., which is spinning off the two papers from current owner Knight Ridder Corp.

The source said the talks were at the "1-yard line" last night and that a deal with Tierney's group, Philadelphia Media Holdings, could be announced sometime this week. No terms were disclosed, although it has been expected that the Daily News and Inquirer will fetch more than $500 million.

The potential deal would inaugurate a new era in Philadelphia journalism and would be good news for the Daily News. Tierney has pledged not to close the People Paper and to instead try to use his local connections and marketing savvy to grow the newspaper and its advertising. Five other bidders have been identified as vying for the Philadelphia newspapers, and at least one had threatened deep cuts to reporting staffs.

People familiar with the negotiations cautioned that while an end to the saga - which began when Knight Ridder was put up for sale last fall - appears to be at hand, the deal is not final.

The TrekMedic Notices: Oddly enough, local news radio station KYW-1060 felt it necessary to make this comment:

A sale to Tierney's Philadelphia Media Holdings would put the papers under the control of a local group instead of a Wall Street conglomerate. It would also be seen as a welcome sign for the Daily News. Tierney has said he would not close the Daily News.

Tierney is active in local Republican politics, but he has promised to keep his interests on the business side and out of the newsroom.

Hmm,...would it have made any difference if the paper was being sold to electrical union chief goon and Philadelphia Democratic Party treasurer John Dougherty instead?

Canada's National Post (link dead)

Human rights groups are raising alarms over a new law passed by the Iranian parliament that would require the country's Jews and Christians to wear coloured badges to identify them and other religious minorities as non-Muslims.

"This is reminiscent of the Holocaust," said Rabbi Marvin Hier, the dean of the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles. "Iran is moving closer and closer to the ideology of the Nazis."

Iranian expatriates living in Canada yesterday confirmed reports that the Iranian parliament, called the Islamic Majlis, passed a law this week setting a dress code for all Iranians, requiring them to wear almost identical "standard Islamic garments."

The law, which must still be approved by Iran's "Supreme Guide" Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect, also establishes special insignia to be worn by non-Muslims.

Iran's roughly 25,000 Jews would have to sew a yellow strip of cloth on the front of their clothes, while Christians would wear red badges and Zoroastrians would be forced to wear blue cloth.

Howard, who posted a comment, also link this story:

Chris Wattie, National Post
Published: Friday, May 19, 2006

Several experts are casting doubt on reports that Iran had passed a law requiring the country’s Jews and other religious minorities to wear coloured badges identifying them as non-Muslims.

The Iranian embassy in Otttawa also denied the Iranian government had passed such a law.

A news story and column by Iranian-born analyst Amir Taheri in yesterday’s National Post reported that the Iranian parliament had passed a sweeping new law this week outlining proper dress for Iran’s majority Muslims, including an order for Jews, Christians and Zoroastrians to wear special strips of cloth.

According to the reports, Jews were to wear yellow cloth strips, called zonnar, while Christians were to wear red and Zoroastrians blue.

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre and Iranian expatriates living in Canada had confirmed that the order had been passed, although it still had to be approved by Iran’s “Supreme Guide” Ali Khamenehi before being put into effect.

Hormoz Ghahremani, a spokesman for the Iranian Embassy in Ottawa, said in an e-mail to the Post yesterday that, “We wish to categorically reject the news item."

This is Progressive,...er,..Progress?

DanielUA,..over at his blog, Young Philly Politics, bemoans what is painfully obvious about Philadelphia politics, or as I call it, Philliness:

The Stamp Campaign for a Rubber Stamp
Submitted by DanielUA on Thu, 05/18/2006 - 10:15am.

As many of our readers know, friend of Young Philly Politics, Tony Payton, waged a campaign against the Democratic Party apparatus. The Party, loving its outsiders, attempted to get Tony kicked off of the ballot. They failed, and their chosen candidate, Emilio Vazquez, was booted off of the ballot. Tony was the last man standing. He was the only Democrat left on the ballot. Yet, still, the party, the old, insular, party, refused to back down. And so, they waged a write-in, or really, a stamp-in campaign against Tony.

They conducted a stamp campaign, all to get themselves Emilio Vazquez, a rubber stamp. How fitting.

More below...

As of now, the election is not decided. Vaquez, with a wooden stamp campaign is up by 29 votes:

They were just slivers of balsa wood with rubber-stamp edges that inked "EMILIO VAZQUEZ" in 10-point type on ballots Tuesday in the 179th State House District.

Small though they were, the stamps apparently were big enough to catapult Vazquez to a historic victory as a write-in candidate over the only qualified Democrat on the ballot.

He was leading political neophyte Tony Payton Jr., 976-947, according to complete but unofficial returns from the North Philadelphia district. Payton vowed yesterday to contest the results.

We Didn't Shoot Him Enough Times!

Police have shot and wounded the man they believe took the life of Philadelphia Police Officer Gary Skerski last week in a bar robbery in Frankford.

The shooting came this afternoon in a confrontation in the 5700 block of North 19th Street in the city's Olney section.

The suspect, tentatively indentified as Solomon Montgomery, was fired at twice by a detective and once by a patrol officer, a police official said. The suspect was struck once in the arm. He was transported by police wagon to Albert Einstein Medical Center.

Police said the break in the case came last night when a relative of the suspect went to police headquarters with a picture of him wearing clothing that fit the description of the man wanted in the Skerski shooting. Police subsequently obtained at least two other tips identifying the same man as the gunman.

And check this out to remind you WHY this prick should've been used for target practice!

Voter Philliness

OK,..I know when Mayor Street made the infamous "brothers and sisters running the city" speech, we were all in trouble, but who knew the "brother" he meant was "Big Brother!"

Dancin' like its 1984,....

Faced with a menacing rise in gun violence, Philadelphia voters overwhelmingly consented yesterday to the use of public video surveillance cameras to deter criminals.

The nonbinding ballot question, which led in late unofficial returns by a 4-1 ratio, was being used by city leaders to gauge whether residents were comfortable with the idea of a network of electronic eyes monitoring public activity.

Video cameras are used in cities such as Chicago and Baltimore. Officials in those cities say that, as a result, crime has been reduced. Cameras also are used on the University of Pennsylvania campus. Thousands of business and residential security cameras exist around the city.

Still, the idea of government-run cameras in neighborhoods, at a time of mounting reports of surveillance of citizens by the federal government, has some wondering whether the added security is worth the intrusion.

The ACLU has raised concerns, and Democratic leaders of the Ninth Ward, which represents Chestnut Hill, urged a no vote on the ballot question.

A Few Reminders About Our Security

Maybe GWB needs to watch these again before he sends those troops down South:

Pentagon: Sept 11, 2001, Part I

Pentagon: Sept 11, 2001, Part II

Lighter Fare - The Phillies RULE!

First, Todd Zolecki has a great story on the Great White Hope - Cole Hamels:

Cole Hamels is kind of a big deal.

To drive home that point, there's a Web site called colehamelsfacts.com. It's an offshoot of those tongue-in-cheek Chuck Norris facts (example: When Chuck Norris does a push-up, he isn't lifting himself up, he's pushing the Earth down) that are everywhere on the Internet. Some of the Cole Hamels facts are funny, while others, well ...

Nevertheless, here are this reporter's top five:

1. Cole Hamels will win one Cy Young ... and 11 Cole Hamels.

2. When kids go to bed they wear Superman pajamas. When Superman goes to bed he wears a Cole Hamels jersey.

3. Pedro Martinez keeps a picture of Cole Hamels under his hat for inspiration.

4. For Halloween, Chuck Norris went as Cole Hamels.

5. Kanye West almost needed to pay Cole Hamels royalties to release that "Jesus Walks" song, but Cole let it go because he doesn't walk anyone so it couldn't really be about him.

Also,..just a reminder - Aaron Rowand is a god!

George! How Dense Can You Be???

Oh,..My,..GOD!!!! I can't believe this is what President Bush came up with:

WASHINGTON — Saying the United States is not militarizing its southern border, President Bush announced Monday night that he is sending up to 6,000 National Guard troops to shore up U.S. Border Patrol efforts to stop the flow of illegal immigrants pouring in from Mexico.

Bush said that the Guardsmen will not serve in a law enforcement capacity, but as assistance to the Border Patrol.

"The Guard will assist the Border Patrol by operating surveillance systems, analyzing intelligence, installing fences and vehicle barriers, building patrol roads and providing training," Bush said in a speech from the Oval Office. More here!

Did I read that right? 6000 UNARMED TROOPS???

GWB - If you're going to put 6000 troops on our border, I want 6000 troops sitting in Hummers, pointing their M240 Gulfs at the Southern border! Philliness a la 1984

Two questions on Tuesday's primary ballot will ask voters whether they favor using video surveillance in public areas to deter and solve crimes, and whether they favor creating a new city ethics board.

City Councilman Darrell Clarke brought the idea of video surveillance to Council's attention, based in part on the reported success of programs in Baltimore and Chicago.

Tuesday's referendum would amend the city charter to say that citizens approve of video surveillance as a crime-fighting tool but want it used in a way that protects civil liberties and respects privacy rights.

Passage of the referendum would not require the use of video surveillance by the city. It's unclear whether the Police Department would install the cameras.

The referendum on creating an ethics board is among the last reform measures that followed the federal corruption investigation that led to a dozen indictments in 2004, and was highlighted by the discovery by police of an FBI bug in Mayor Street's office.

The TrekMedic muses:

Just as "Operation Safe Streets" did nothing more than move the drug dealers and murdering thugs out of Kensington and into other parts of the city, this new initiative will do nothing to stop the murder rate in Philadelphia.

Finally, Someone Gets It!

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Pentagon is looking at ways the military can help provide more security along the U.S. southern border, defense officials said Thursday, once again drawing the nation's armed forces into a politically sensitive domestic role.

Paul McHale, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, asked officials this week to come up with options for the use of military resources and troops - particularly the National Guard - along the border with Mexico, according to defense officials familiar with the discussions. The officials, who requested anonymity because the matter has not been made public, said there are no details yet on a defense strategy.

The request comes as some Southern lawmakers met this week with White House strategist Karl Rove for a discussion that included making greater use of National Guard troops to shore up border control. The Senate is poised to pass legislation this month that would call for additional border security, a new guest worker program and provisions opening the way to eventual citizenship for many of the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants in the country.

``The Texas delegation is very concerned about the border and are pushing urgency,'' said Rep. Kevin Brady, R-Texas, who joined other Texas Republicans in a meeting with Rove this week. He said Rove was ``very forthright'' about border projects that Homeland Security is starting up, its current projects and what the needs are.

Rep. Ken Marchant, R-Texas, who also attended the meeting, said the lawmakers left ``very encouraged.''

Aaron Rowand is a GOD!

Perhaps there haven't been many championship memories in Phillies history, but certainly there have been memorable catches.

Richie Ashburn had to make a sliding catch or 100 on Shibe Park's grass. Lenny Dykstra undoubtedly crashed into the center-field fence at Veterans Stadium a time or two.

Then there was "The Catch" at Citizens Bank Park last night, the one that preceded a long rain delay but wound up being the key play in a 2-0 Phillies win over the New York Mets. The game was shortened to five innings by rain, but it began with a historic grab by Phils centerfielder Aaron Rowand.

In catching a drive by Mets rightfielder Xavier Nady, Rowand wound up crashing face-first into a metal bar topping a chain-link fence in center, and wiped out what would likely have been a three-run triple in the first inning.

From a related story:

Jimmy Rollins was one of the first on the scene after Rowand's beautiful yet ugly catch-and-crash.

The catch likely ranked up there with the best in team history, but Rowand might have paid the dearest price for one. He wound up with a broken nose and facial lacerations that are expected to require surgery today at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

"It was pretty nasty out there," Rollins said. "It wasn't just the nose, he also had a laceration just under his eye. He's a tough dude."

The Philliness Guide to Voting

OK,...as much as I hate to admit this, I'm going to take a pass on the primary vote next week.

Why? In the corrupt, neo-Socialist City of Philadelphia, I have very few choices left to me at this stage in the game, seeing as most of the competition was squelched in the back rooms of bars all over the city.

Let's take a look at some of the major races in Pennsylvania:

US Senate - Rick Santorum (R) - unopposed vs Robert Casey (D) - for all intents unopposed
Governor - Lynn Swann (R) - unopposed vs Ed Rendell (D) - unopposed
US Congress - 1st PA District - Bob Brady (D) - unopposed, no Republican candidate listed

My State Senator and Represenative (I won't name them for my own security) are both Dems who run unopposed and never receive a challenge from the Republicans, Libertarians, or Constitutionalists.

So,...I'm saving all my energy and blog space for the November "Keep America Red" campaign!

So,..What HAS Bush Done for Us Lately?

The Daily Dose has the answer to those cowering at the MSM-sponsored polls showing GWB's 31% Popularity:

-The economy is great
-We haven’t been attacked on our soil in 5 years
-Thousands of Al Qaeda members have been killed; more captured
-Afghanistan is steam rolling towards a democracy and is an ally
-The Dow Jones nears a record high; likely to surpass
-Great judges have been appointed to the Supreme Court in the last year
-The US is leading the United Nations reformation
-Hundreds of terrorist plots have been foiled.
-Libya voluntarily gave up its WMD program
-Bush has gotten Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt and others to assist us more than ever thought possible.
-The fight has been taken to our enemies
-Osama is hiding like a Bitch
-Bush implemented Clinton’s regime change policy in Iraq and freedom is being fought for.
-Bush has forced the world to take notice of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
-And democracy is slowly spreading in the Middle East.

Now secure the border, change strategy in Iraq, fire Rummy, cut spending, and this will be a very historic and great presidency.

Ronald McDonald,..or Chester Molester?

Kinda gives new meaning to "I'm Lovin' it!"

An exclusive NewsChannel 5 investigation has uncovered new information about a convicted sex offender. He worked at a local McDonald's. And what we've now learned raises even more questions about what he was doing inside a restaurant that targets kids.

By all standards, Nicholas Aloyo has been a deeply troubled person for years.

Five years ago, he was convicted for soliciting sex from a minor.

Most recently, he was re-arrested for possession of child pornography.

(snip)

The report also says that, prior to his conviction, Aloyo had been fired from three other jobs for "inappropriate sexual comments" to employees and customers.

That's why he was rated a "high risk" and ordered not to accept employment in contact with minors.

Keri: Tom! The critics! They're coming!

Tom: Don't worry, Keri! Xenu will protect you! The spaceship will beam us out! Just click your heels together and chant "Xee-nuu! Xee-nuu!"

Keri: But what about vitamins and exercise?

Tom: That's only for post-partum depression!

Nostradamus,..er,..The TrekMedic posits:

Sen. Joseph Biden recently put forth this idea on how to end the violence in Iraq:

US Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr., senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, in a speech said Monday before the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia that Iraq may need to have one central government with three seperate regions for the Shiites, Sunnis, and Kurds.

Biden, who opposes permanent military bases in Iraq and US control of the country’s natural resources, said that although American military and political leadership in Baghdad have said that the United States does not have plans for permanent bases, “the Iraqi people remain suspicious of our intentions and are growing increasingly impatient.”

Seems to me I've ruminated on the very same subject last month:

And now, after nearly two decades, what has become of Yugoslavia?

* Slovenia - stable democracy, burgeoning economy and EU member
* Croatia - stable democracy, burgeoning economy and future EU member
* Macedonia - making slow and steady headway towards stabilizing its sovereignty
* Serbia - Once the heart of Yugoslavia, now trying to move on from its past. Largely ignored the death of dictator Slobodan Milosevic
* Montenegro - Partnered with Serbia in a joint republic, but struggling to secede from Serbia
* Bosnia - Its future is uncertain. Largely occupied by UNtied Nations troops.

Does any of this sound familiar? Can we afford the two-decade incubation period in the Middle East? Will the MSMedia allow the same?

In the year 2026, will the Unites States be doing business with Iraq, or Kurdistan, a Sunni republic and a Shi'a republic?

Hey,..wait a minute,..isn't this the same Sen. Biden who derailed his own presidential campaign when he was accused of plagiarism??

Hmm,...

Progressive = Mature? Not Even Close!

I normally don't like to give the other side any more free than what the MSM already doles out, but this posting shows just what kind of mindset the "progressives" possess.

The post is by DanielUA, who is the ringleader,..um,..webmaster. of this "progressive" forum.

John Perzel: Worst Person Ever. Still.
Submitted by DanielUA on Fri, 05/05/2006 - 9:44am.

The man with the horn heads strikes again! Just when I forgot how terrible a person John Perzel is, it has come out that just when the PA House was getting ready to vote on property tax reform, the good ol' speaker from the NE was... in Florida, making himself thousands of dollars. And, despite the fact that the bill was going to pass, Perzel's absence prevented it even from being brought to a vote.

Say what you want about Perzel's sometimes-dubious actions, but,..c'mon,..doodling?

Oh,.and don't try to debate Danny Boy,..he doesn't like that and usually just bans you for life for utilizing the First Amendment for something other than "progressive."

The End Result of multiculturalism

So, yesterday, I took the day off and went sauntering about New York City with some friends. At one point, I found myself eating lunch at a local Wendy's restaurant. As I was waiting in line, a couple ahead of me, clearly not from the area (had a heavy Slavic accent)is trying to order a burger, fries and drink a la carte. The Nuyorican cashier, not exactly fluent in the English language herself, is trying to explain to this poor couple about combo meals.

And clearly, Miss Nuyorican is from the "Scream-louder-if-they-don't-undertstand-you" school of communications. All the while, she's chattering along is Spanish to her cohorts and saying some fairly derogatory things about the hapless couple (the TrekMedic is fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and Italian, BTW).

Finally, I stepped in and tried to explain everything to the couple myself. They understood me without a problem.

Then my turn came up,....more muttered Hispanic nonsequitors. Imagine her surprise when I proclaimed, loudly, "Si va a vivir en este pais, aprenda la lengua, pendeja!"

Not surprisingly, they got my combo order wrong.....

But the point to all of this is simply, "Why isn't English enforced as the language of commerce in its own country?" I can understand the out-of-towner couple, but someone who has lived here for years (she had a definite Bronx accent to her Spanish)?? Since when did our "melting pot" become a "salad bowl??"

An Anti-ACLU Rant for 5/4/06

HT to Matt at Peace Through Strength for the link:

Matt makes the following observation:

Now, time for my little rant...

1st Amendment to the United States Constitution:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...

In no way do those words imply that We the People or even our government are prohibited from making a reference to God, in any way, shape, or form. Actually it's quite the opposite. God is not a religion, nor is the government choosing your religion (unlike many Islamic countries).

The following post shows the usual ACLU "Anti-Christian Legislation Union" posturing:

Law would put 'In God We Trust' in schools

Thursday, April 07, 2005
By Bill Toland, Post-Gazette Harrisburg Bureau

HARRISBURG -- The national statement of faith, "In God We Trust," has been appearing on coins since 1864, and has been the country's motto since 1956. But should it be appearing in each of Pennsylvania's tens of thousands of public classrooms?

A proposed law, now awaiting action in the state House, would require the motto to appear in every public school classroom, auditorium and cafeteria in Pennsylvania.

If it gains steam, the "National Motto Display Act," as it's being called, is likely to begin a battle pitting familiar foes -- proponents say it's an historical motto that harmlessly brings a little bit of God into schools, while opponents say it's a possible breach of the church-state wall.

"It sounded right to me," said Rep. Bob Bastian, R-Somerset, recalling the first time the bill crossed his desk. Bastian is one of the bill's sponsors. "We're a country that was formed by Christian-thinking people, and we need to continue to have our trust in God."

Each year brings new God-in-the-schools scuffles. Last year, there were court battles over the Pledge of Allegiance, and whether the phrase "one nation, under God" represented a government endorsement of a particular religion. In York County, parents and the Dover Area school board are still fighting over whether the term "intelligent design" -- offered as an alternative to evolutionary theory -- should be made part of a high school biology course.

The "In God We Trust" campaign new to Pennsylvania, but not to other states. Legislatures in South Carolina, Virginia, Mississippi, Ohio, Utah and Louisiana, among others, have either approved the display of the motto in public classrooms, or have at least discussed such measures.

In Pennsylvania, House Republicans are the main backers of the "In God We Trust" proposal, though three Democrats also put their names to the bill.

The bill says the display of the motto -- and an explanation of its origin -- is part and parcel of a well-rounded civics education, the same as a review of the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Pledge of Allegiance, national anthem, important court decisions and texts written by the founding fathers.

"A proper understanding of United States history and government is essential to good citizenship," the bill says. The bill says nothing, though, of "Christian-thinking" founders.

The prime sponsor is Rep. Tom Creighton, R-Lancaster. Creighton has also submitted a bill related to the Dover "intelligent design" controversy, which would create a state law allowing "a board of school directors [to] include, as a portion of [biology] instruction, the theory of intelligent design," whenever evolution is also discussed.

The American Civil Liberties Union, which historically has furrowed its brow when the word "God" is required to be mentioned in a public school, has previously registered its disapproval over the "intelligent design" requirement. The ACLU likewise disapproves of the "In God We Trust" bill.

"We believe that we should respect the religious viewpoints of all people, and that not everybody in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania subscribes to the religious beliefs included in this motto," said Larry Frankel, legislative director of the ACLU's Pennsylvania chapter.

Frankel also cast his own doubts on the idea that the motto is an educational tool.

"I'm not sure what the historical value really is, [if] it's going to be posted in the school cafeteria," he said.

The American Family Association, whose mission is to "equip citizens to change the culture to reflect Biblical truth and traditional family values," is the primary mover behind the "In God We Trust" campaign, and has said one of its goals is to put the motto in every classroom in America. Often, if a school district can't afford the posters, or thinks it shouldn't pay for them with taxpayer money, the association donates them.

The group has seen success, in varying degrees.

Three years ago in Utah, a state legislator sponsored a bill that would have required "In God We Trust" in every public school classroom. Later, the bill was modified to require that the motto appear in at least one place somewhere in the school building, but not necessarily in each classroom. The bill then became law.

More recently, in Ohio, lawmakers wrote a bill that would have forced all districts to purchase, at a $3 million total expense, an 11-by-14-inch framed copy of the motto for each classroom. But that bill died.

So far, 18 states have passed laws allowing the motto to be displayed. Most laws give the schools an option, but Virginia and Mississippi require the motto be displayed in each class.

Randy Sharp, director of special projects for the American Family Association, had harsh words for the ACLU.

"When you're talking about historical documents, there's no reason the motto shouldn't be posted in the schools," Sharp said. "But anytime a school board wants to put up the motto, the ACLU is the paper tiger on this issue -- they come in, throw around a bunch of toothless threats, and the school board backs down."

State laws, Sharp said, allow school boards to install the motto in classrooms without the fear of ACLU reprisal.

Locally, school districts in Bedford, Clarion, Clinton, Crawford, Mercer, Somerset and Venango counties have approved the display of the motto in their classrooms.

Supporters of the "In God We Trust" display say historical documents ought not to be subject to the typical state-church court inquiries -- after all, the Declaration of Independence mentions both "Nature's God" and man's "Creator," there is no clamor to remove that document from public schools. Besides, the "In God We Trust" motto is visible in other public buildings, so what's the big deal if it's in a public school?

"You can't walk through this Capitol without seeing hundreds of references to God," Bastian said. Many of the murals and stained-glass windows in the century-old Capitol building have religious themes, and in fact, the 26,000-ton dome that caps the building is modeled after St. Peter's Basilica in Rome.

But the ACLU and others note that while the motto appears on U.S. currency and in government buildings, in a ceremonial manner, the Supreme Court has distinguished between ceremonial religious expression in a general setting and religious speech directed specifically at public school students.

"Classrooms have always been treated differently," Frankel said.

05-03-06 = 09-11-01, Part II

Al Qaeda conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole on Wednesday for his role in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

"America, you lost. I won," Moussaoui said, clapping his hands as he was led out of the courtroom after the verdict was read.

Reading the jurors' decision outside the Alexandria, Va., courthouse, Edward Adams, the court's public information officer, said the verdict only indicated that the jurors were "not unanimous in favor of a sentence of death."

Moussaoui was convicted of several terrorism-related counts last year, including conspiring with Al Qaeda to commit acts of terrorism and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction.

Center City rumble

Things are getting downright nasty in the Democratic primary for the 182d state House District in Center City.

Incumbent Rep. Babette Josephs' campaign has accused challenger Larry Farnese of receiving a contribution from the National Italian American PAC, which - and here's the real rub in the liberal district - has given money to conservative U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum (R., Pa.).

"You've got a guy running for the Democratic nomination ... who's trying to hide money he received from a group which funds one of the most right-wing, antiwoman, antigay Republicans around," said Lionel Artom-Ginzburg, attorney for the Josephs reelection campaign.

Baloney, Farnese said. While the PAC did support Santorum, who is the highest-ranking Italian American in politics, it says it is bipartisan and has given to State Sen. Vince Fumo of Philadelphia, a Democrat (and an Italian American). Records show the committee has received contributions from prominent Democrats such as U.S. Rep. Bob Brady (D., Pa.), State Treasurer Bob Casey Jr., Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll, and others.

"She is completely out of touch, and this just proves it," Farnese said. "She campaigns every time by pulling these stunts and spreading untrue and unfair statements. Can we trust her in Harrisburg?"

- Thomas Fitzgerald

The TrekMedic ponders:

OMG! Imagine that,...groups other than pro-black, pro-affirmative action, pro-abortion that give to Democrats! I guess ol' Babette is jealous. Hmm,...Italians supporting other Italians,..what a unique idea,....

United 93

I saw the movie on Saturday,.....as of today, I'm still too numb to make any comments. Just go see it for yourselves.

¡Aquí, solamente inglés se habla!

WASHINGTON -
President Bush said Friday the national anthem should be sung in English — not Spanish — in a blunt rejection of a new Spanish-language version. He also expressed opposition to a national work stoppage called for Monday to dramatize the importance of immigrants to the U.S. economy.

"I'm not a supporter of boycotts," Bush said, while restating his support for a comprehensive overhaul of immigration laws.

Bush made his comments at a Rose Garden news conference as a Spanish-language version of "The Star-Spangled Banner," hit the airways featuring artists such as Wyclef Jean, hip-hop star Pitbull and Puerto Rican singers Carlos Ponce and Olga Tanon.

Called "Nuestro Himno" — "Our Anthem" — the Spanish version rewrites some of the English version. For instance, the second stanza says, "My people keep fighting. It's time to break the chains."

"I think people who want to be a citizen of this country ought to learn English and they ought to learn to sing the national anthem in English," Bush said.

If that doesn't bother you enough,..think about the people behind this movement: Groups like MEChA, that actively support the annexation of our Southwest and the formation of Aztlan.

More here,..

With this kind of stupidty going on along our Southern border, I am reminded of a line from the Three Stooges short "I'll Never Heil Again!": "Your minorities are creeping into our majorities, thus making our majorities minorities!"

This appears to be the easiest way for MEChA to accomplish its goals: illegal immigration, en masse, into our country, then stir up the liberal masses to give them what they want!
