And Now We Wait for the Other Shoe to Drop
Joe Natoli, publisher of The Inquirer, Philadelphia Daily News, and Philly.com, has resigned to take a job as chief financial officer for the University of Miami.
Miami began recruiting Natoli, a Florida native, last spring, before the paper's sale to Philadelphia Media Holdings, said Dean Colson, chairman of the university board.
"We approached him. I considered him a friend," as did other board members, based on Natoli's long prior career as a Florida newspaper executive, Colson said. But Natoli refused to consider leaving Philadelphia until the sale was completed, Colson said.
In a note to the company's 2,500 employees, Natoli, who came to Philadelphia in 2004, called the move a homecoming. Natoli attended college in South Florida, where his father worked for the Miami Herald, and his parents and in-laws still live there. He expects to start the Miami job in September.
Natoli's duties will be split between Brian P. Tierney, chief executive officer of the papers' and Web site's new owner, Philadelphia Media Holdings LLC, and Gordon Medenica, a former New York Times Co. executive.
