An Anti-ACLU Rant for 9/29/05

Subtitled "How The ACLU is Ruining Another American Pasttime!"

In yet another mad rush to "level the playing field," political correctness is ruining yet another American pasttime.

This week, the NCAA denied the appeal by the University of North Dakota to continue to use the nickname "Fighting Sioux."

From the article:

Now, the University of North Dakota, home of the Fighting Sioux, has appealed for an exemption -- even though UND's nickname has been officially condemned by the vast majority of the tribal leaders in the state. This should make the school's appeal exceedingly easy to reject. If the NCAA does otherwise, there would be no point in having a policy at all. "This is a moral, ethical and civil rights issue," says Leigh Jeanotte, the director of UND's American Indian Student Services department. "We have to chip away at this over time. Slavery wasn't changed overnight. Women's suffrage wasn't changed overnight. More and more people are becoming aware that using American Indian names in collegiate sports is just not the right thing to do."

(snip)

...the United Tribes of North Dakota, an association of those five tribes inside the state (three of which are Sioux), passed a resolution in Bismark condemning the nickname and imploring the NCAA to turn down UND's appeal.

Charles Kupchella, president of UND, is further castigated in the article.

The Tampa Tribune takes the case to its very heart:

NCAA, Or ACLU?

Published: Aug 14, 2005

It appears the NCAA has been taken over by the ACLU. Why else would NCAA want to destroy the spirit and history of teams that have taken names related to Native Americans? I cannot imagine teams with names like the Seminoles, Braves and Indians suddenly having to change their names, all in the name of being ``politically correct.''

With all the problems in sports today, I would think the NCAA would have more pressing matters than dealing with college team names. I would certainly like to know how many members of the NCAA governing group are affiliated with the ACLU. You can't really believe they thought of this idiotic idea by themselves.

Free Republic has a nice discussion on the same topic here.

One thread has a great line in it: What is next for the NCAA to ban because someone may take offence? Will they ban all animal names because PETA might be offended, or all cities with religious names because the ACLU is offended? Where does all this ridiculous political correctness end?

Oddly enough, the Alliance Defense Fund makes a vague reference:

"The ACLU is once more specifically targeting a cross while it ignores Native American religious symbols. It reveals their desire to target all things Christian, regardless of the fact that the cross in the Tijeras seal is clearly an historic symbol and not an attempt to endorse any particular faith," McCaleb said.

Personally, I disagree. Anything related to whites or Christians is a target for the ACLU.

Click Here for the Boston Globe's report on the issue.

Now, in the interest of full disclosure, when I started researching this, I had a VERY difficult time finding many statements made by, or directly atributed to, the ACLU.

But I think the message is quite clear: The ACLU has become such a pervasive force and assault on all things American, that even when they aren't directly involved, the stench of their actions still pervades!!
