An Anti-ACLU Rant for 9/15/05

Short and sweet tonight folks,...

As many of you know, I work as a paramedic. In this day and age, it continually frustrates me to have to interact with health care professionals with a minimal work knowledge of the English language.

Unfortunately, hospitals and health care systems, especially those that receive federal funding (Medicare) are left with no choice but to hire these people and place them in positions where miscommunications can lead to life-threatening mistakes.

Why does this occur?

Here are a few samplings of how the ACLU has made it possible to hire people who do not speak the native tongue:

Supreme Court Hears Arguments Today on English-Only Rule and Censorship of Prisoners

ACLU Wins Right to Sue Maine Medical Center Over Interpreter Services for Patients

Comments to the Office of Civil Rights in Response to Policy Guidance on Prohibition Against National Origin Discrimination As It Affects Persons with Limited English Proficiency (“LEP Guidance”)

More gold can be mined at the ACLU's Immigrants Rights page.

Good find! Great post! Thank you. It frustrates me that we have to cater to others like that. They should have to learn to communicate with us.
