Appeasing Howard Dean is Not How to Campaign

This is a Red November Initiative Post!

U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz last week joined a growing list of Democrats calling for the resignation of Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld.

"Rumsfeld's management of the war has emboldened and strengthened our enemies, and his recent character attacks against Americans who question his conduct undermines the very freedoms he has sworn to protect," Schwartz, a Democrat from Montgomery County, said in a statement.

On Tuesday, Rumsfeld told the American Legion that war opponents displayed the kind of thinking that delayed military action against Adolf Hitler's Nazi Germany.

Schwartz said Rumsfeld executed the Iraq war without a plan beyond the initial invasion in 2003, and has rejected advice from experienced generals, members of Congress, and others.

"From his failure to prepare the military for an extended deployment with sufficient personnel and equipment, to his decision to disband the Iraq military after the war, to his uncompromising adherence to a failed strategy, he has demonstrated that he does not grasp the challenges facing our nation or our troops," Schwartz said.

James Turner, a spokesman in Rumsfeld's office, said in response that Rumsfeld "serves at the pleasure of the president."

Schwartz, serving her first term, faces Raj Peter Bhakta, a Republican and former contestant on Donald Trump's TV show The Apprentice, in the November general election.
