MLK Day,....

As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr's birthday today, I am struck by several thoughts:

  1. As usual, its another excuse to get well-off white kids from the suburbs to come to North Philly and do what the locals can't/won't do on a regualr basis: clean up the neighborhood (guessing that's part of the 40 acres and a mule philosophy).
  2. It is truly remarkable that portions of MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech were extemporaneous and 40+ years later, it is ingrained in the American psyche.
  3. Let's parse and refelct on some of that speech:

'I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed --- "We hold these truths to be self evident, that all men are created equal."' - Constitutionally supported and upheld every day, despite the best efforts of the ACLU!

"I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slaveowners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood." - This is probably truer now in the South than in most parts of the North.

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character." - Again, this would probably be true, if not for the diligent efforts of the ACLU to keep us separate and at odds for their own gain!

And while on the subject, it appears the ACLU is actually trying to use MLK's image for their own perverse gains, yet again. Click here for the whole story!
