All the News That Fits?
I normally don't reference the Philadelphia Inkwaster (not to be confused with the Philly Fishwrapper), but an editorial yesterday on the Scott Peterson trial and 24-hour news coverage got me thinking,...
This morning, as I was watching CNN, I saw a news blurb in the crawl about a man from Oregon who killed HIS pregnant wife, AND his three children. He received a life sentence for the crimes. Now, I don't know much about this case and any readers, please feel free to update me via the comments.
I was just wondering, what made this case (pardon the phrase) so boring, while the Scott Peterson trial was parsed and debated and commented upon ad nauseum for nearly two years?
So to dovetail this into the editorial, the Inkwaster staff posed this scenario:
In the time of the Peterson trial, genocide has been committed in the Sudan, the AIDS epidemic is spreading, phony elections are propping up third-world governments,...and the list went on.
Makes you wonder,...why aren't the 24-hr news channels like CNN and MSNBC devoting the kind of time, talent and energy to these stories that they do to run-of-the-mill crimes?
Could it be that, if they dig enough, the ultimate answer will be that such coverage will expose the UN for the inept, incompetent, and impotent body that it is?
And these were the people that were to administer Kerry's "global test?"
As a old friend of mine says (very often),.."Its all bread and circuses!"

Well shame on you for watching CNN - anyways, I can sorta fill you in on a few of the details. First, the entire family was white, so there was no race slant. Second, they were NOT the most attractive group of folks, sorry, but it's true - Scott and Lacy win that contest hands down, even if Scott and Lacy were standing with their backs facing us, Scott and Lacy would have won. Third, Lacy was pregnant, which threw an extra slant into the story (this man's wife was not). Fourth, the man talked about how demons had convinced him that he had to kill his wife and kids - he was pretty much out there. He'd already spent some time (between arrest and trial) in the nuthouse trying to get him up to a point that he could stand trial. Evidently they finally got him there but just enough on board for him to plead guilty so he can spend the rest of his born days in the slammer.
Hope that helps to bring you up to speed - watching CNN, the shame, oh, the shame.
I'm with you, TrekMed.... found no interest in the Peterson case. And, when innundated with excerpts of their conversations by the MSM... yawn... had even less interest. Almost embarrassingly uneducated these two are.
Point of fact, these are people whose inter-domestic doin's wouldn't interest me no matter what the circumstance.
The Oregon case? You can learn more about Longo HERE and HERE .
But frankly, TrekMed, who the heck knows why the MSM picks one murder over another. Why was JonBenet singled out when so many little girls are the victims of violent murders? Especially when you consider how "stage Mom" her mother was, making her a character in a story with whom few could sympathize.
One thing is evident. The "sheep" mentality is alive and well in the MSM. They seem unable to multi-task, following each other's lead and over-covering the same few stories with only slightly different talking heads as guests.
Perhaps the largest thing I object to nowadays is the dearth of actual "news", and the overabundance of "speculation" masquerading as news. What a crime since they have so much airtime available, and there is so much happening in the world... both good and bad.
And yup... perhaps the biggest story going is the Oil for Food programme and the associated threads that will ensue. Yet few are demonstrating they have the balls to tackle the big guns.
Michael,..sorry,...We just got FNC in my area, so CNN is just a force of habit.
Mata,...maybe I'm out of the loop, but "MSM?"
